Chapter 83

Pulling out his phone, Alexander looked at the caller ID and turned to Elena. “I’m sorry, I need to take this

call.”

She nodded to give him permission.

After Alexander answered the call, his expression changed drastically when he heard what the person on the other end of the line said.

“Is the information reliable?” he asked.

After a pause, he continued, “Alright, I understand. I’ll head back immediately. Don’t panic.”

Elena felt her heart sink after seeing how grave he looked.

Once Alexander ended the call, she quickly asked, “Mr. Golden, did something happen?”

Alexander glanced at Elena and suppressed the emotion in his eyes. “It’s nothing, Ms. Miller. It’s getting late, so you should go back in and rest. I’ll have to get going.”

With that, he got into his car and drove away without waiting for her response.

Elena had originally wanted to ask if there was anything she could do to help. After all, she owed him so

many favors. It was only right that she repay him.

However, she didn’t expect Alexander to leave in such a rush. That could only mean that something

serious must have happened. Elena couldn’t help but feel a sinking feeling in her chest.

When she returned indoors, she ran into Jane in the living room. “Grandma, it’s so late. Why aren’t you

resting yet?” she asked hurriedly.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I came out for a walk. Did you go out just now?” Jane said.

“Yes. Mr. Golden was outside earlier, so we talked for a bit.”

“Mr. Golden? You mean Alexander. Oh, you young people! Really, meeting at this hour…” Jane chuckled

with amusement.

“Grandma, we didn’t…”

Jane merely held Elena’s hand and smiled kindly. “My dear Lena, nothing matters as long as you’re happy.”

Elana’s nose stung at that moment. She gripped Jane’s hand in return and said, “Grandma, I’m already happy just being able to come home.”

“You silly child. This will always be your home. No matter where you go, you can always come back

anytime.” Jane reached out and stroked her head with affection.

“Yes, I know that.” Elena’s eyes were red as she smiled back.

After chatting for a while, she suddenly remembered something and asked, “By the way, Grandma, do you know someone named Nadine?”

“Nadine?” Jane thought for a moment. “That name does sound familiar, but I can’t place it right now…”

Elena understood immediately.

Sure enough, Nadine had been lying.

“While Nadine was abroad, she built connections with the Millers, and Mrs. Miller Senior took a liking to

her.”

That was what Justin had once told her. Clearly, those were words Nadine fed him.

But now, Jane herself couldn’t even recall who Nadine was, let alone any close relationship or feelings of

fondness she supposedly had toward her.

Elena had already suspected as much.

Jane would always share every little thing with her whenever they chatted over video call. If there really had been a young lady she liked so much, she would have definitely mentioned it to Elena long ago.

“Oh, I remember now.” Jane suddenly slapped her forehead. “A few years ago, I got bored and decided to travel overseas. I ran into a young lady at a tourist spot.

“She kept following me for some reason and insisted on showing me around enthusiastically. I found her actions strange and eventually got the bodyguards to make her leave. She was far too noisy. She introduced herself at the time, and I think her name was Nadine.”

Jane had actually disliked Nadine back then. It wasn’t because of her enthusiasm nor her endless chatter, but because of the insincere smile on Nadine’s face.

Having lived this long, there wasn’t much Jane hadn’t seen or experienced at her age. How could she not

tell?
