Chapter 82
Perhaps it was the quiet night that made it seem so, but Alexander’s voice sounded especially gentle at
that moment.
Before he could say anything else, Elena walked up to him and said decisively, “Mr. Golden, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to pry into your private life, but I think we should keep an appropriate distance if you have a girlfriend.”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm and resolute.
A rare hint of confusion appeared in Alexander’s eyes. “Girlfriend?”
Soon, he spoke again. “I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Elena’s fingers tightened as she clutched the hem of her clothes. The fabric felt cool against her warm
palm.
She had already prepared herself for the possibility that Alexander might be displeased by her bringing up his private affairs.
However, she hadn’t expected him to be so bewildered. Her question triggered ripples of shock and
surprise in Alexander’s deep eyes, like a stone dropped into a lake.
It turned out that he didn’t have a girlfriend. The rumors she heard were wrong.
Yet even so, Elena felt no joy or relief apart from the sudden realization. So what if he didn’t have a girlfriend? She was going to be engaged to Zachary, and she still needed to keep her distance from
Alexander.
Alexander slightly clenched his hands at his sides, his knuckles turning white under the dim light. He took a step forward toward Elena, and his movement kicked up a breeze that lifted the strands of Elena’s fringe. The cold atmosphere around him drew nearer,
“Ms. Miller, where did you hear that rumor?” Alexander’s tone was lower than before. His last words
carried an imperceptible hint of probing.
“No one… I just happened to overhear it from someone else.” Elena tried to brush it off vaguely. She definitely couldn’t expose Camila in front of Alexander.
Since she didn’t want to reveal who it was, Alexander didn’t press her for an answer. He suddenly recalled
something back when he had dinner with Edward. Edward wanted to introduce Clara to him, and
Alexander remembered saying that he wasn’t single.
Firstly, he hadn’t wanted to embarrass Edward at that time. After all, they were acquainted through his family. Secondly, he was soon to be engaged to Elena. Even if she didn’t yet have romantic feelings for him, Alexander had already decided she was the only woman he wanted to spend his life with.
He wouldn’t consider a relationship with another woman even if Elena ultimately rejected him. That was
why he had said that he wasn’t single.
He hadn’t expected the news to spread so quickly and reach Elena’s ears, causing her to misunderstand.
Alexander swallowed, and his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. A low sigh escaped from his throat as emotions swirled in his eyes. He fixed his gaze on Elena’s evasive gaze.
He didn’t care what others thought, but when it came to her, he cared too much about her misunderstanding and distancing herself from him.
Elena said, “I’m sorry, Mr. Golden. I was being presumptuous.”
Alexander chuckled. “It’s not your fault. I didn’t handle things well and caused you trouble.”
Had she been worried about their engagement all this time? Did she think that the engagement would be called off if he had a girlfriend?
Fortunately, he had managed to clear things up in time.
“Well then, Ms. Miller. Can you stop being so formal with me now?” Alexander pressed closer toward her.
Instinctively, Elena took a step back. Her lips were trembling, but her tone remained resolute. “No, we still have to keep our distance.”
“Why?” Alexander furrowed his brows.
Elena was baffled. Did he really not know why? She was about to speak when Alexander’s phone suddenly
rang.
