Chapter 77
Alexander said, “There’s no need. He’s never short-staffed at his exhibitions.”
Elena muttered under her breath, “Then why are you telling me this?”
“What did you say, Ms. Miller?”
“Nothing much.” Elena gave him an insincere smile.
“Ms. Miller, while your fake smile looks beautiful too, I still prefer your real smile,” he remarked.
The corners of Elena’s lips drooped immediately. What nonsense did he mean by talking about whether
her smile was real or fake? She wouldn’t smile then.
The car pulled to a stop at the gates of the Miller residence. Elena turned to bid Alexander goodbye.
Thank you for sending me back. Mr. Golden, I’ll go home now.”
With that, she was about to open the door and get out when Alexander said, “Wait a moment.”
“Yes?”
“Don’t forget about treating me to that meal,” he reminded her earnestly.
Elena definitely wouldn’t forget, but Alexander’s seriousness regarding this matter baffled her. “I won’t forget. Don’t worry, Mr. Golden.”
After saying that, she opened the door and got out. Just as before, Alexander’s car didn’t drive away
immediately. He kept watching her until she was safely inside the gates.
It was only after Elena stepped into her house that she realized something. Throughout the journey, the atmosphere between her and Alexander had felt far too comfortable. A familiar feeling buried deep inside
her heart stirred back to life.
This could not happen.
The color drained from Elena’s face immediately.
Alexander very likely had a girlfriend. And Elena herself was about to be engaged to Zachary. No matter how she looked at it, she couldn’t…
And now, she still had to treat him to a meal.
Were the two of them going to eat alone?
After thinking it over, Elena took out her phone and called Alexander. He picked up the call swiftly. “Ms. Miller.”
Elena forced herself to stay calm and spoke in a casual tone. “Mr. Golden, I’d like to bring a friend along when I treat you to dinner. Is that alright?”
She knew that it wasn’t the best thing to do, but it was better than the two of them dining alone.
Alexander stayed silent for a moment before replying, “Ms. Miller, I’d much prefer it to be just the two of
us if possible.”
Elena frowned slightly.
There was a faint trace of intimacy in his response. Was this really appropriate?
She wanted to bring up the matter of him having a girlfriend directly, but it might seem presumptuous if she mentioned it outright when he hadn’t made the relationship public.
So Elena replied in a vague manner, “Mr. Golden, you can bring a friend along as well. I’ll treat both of you.”
“I have no friends to bring along,” he said curtly.
“Mr. Golden, please think it over again. I… I’ll hang up now.” With that, Elena hung up without waiting for Alexander’s response.
She took several deep breaths. A strong gust of night breeze suddenly blew past her, and her mind
cleared up even more.
All things considered, her vague feelings of attraction hadn’t yet reached the point of being uncontrollable.
Now that she knew that Alexander might have a girlfriend, there was no chance she would allow herself to continue making this mistake.
Her phone suddenly rang. Elena thought that it was Alexander calling back, but it wasn’t him when she
checked the caller ID. Instead, it was Michael.
Michael was a close friend of Justin’s. For him to call her out of the blue…
Elena furrowed her brows and declined the call, but Michael called her again. Although Elena no longer wanted to deal with anyone or anything related to Justin, she was worried that Michael would keep trying
to contact her.
In the end, she decided to answer the call. She intended to clear things up and stop him from bothering
her again in the future.
