But before Zachary had even had the chance to recommend himself for it, the family had already arranged for Alexander to be engaged to Elena.
He couldn’t understand it. Wasn’t Alexander supposed to have no interest in women?
In all these years, Zachary had never once heard of Alexander showing the slightest affection for any woman. So why would the family arrange a marriage for him?
Zachary thought to himself that Alexander wasn’t the kind of person who would quietly obey and accept such an arrangement.
He had thought that Alexander would refuse, but to his shock, Alexander actually agreed.
Not only that, Alexander had even traveled to Slushire not long ago. On the surface, they had claimed that it was for business. But how could that sort of business require Alexander’s personal attention?
He had probably gone because of Elena.
Zachary couldn’t understand why Alexander seemed to care so much about the woman he had been
arranged to marry.
And Zachary regretted it deeply. If he had just been a little braver…
But it was already too late to regret anything.
Earlier that day, Zachary had heard that Elena’s friends had arranged a welcome party for her. Coincidentally, one of his own friends, Peter, had been invited.
So, he had used the excuse of wanting to relax and asked Peter to take him along.
Zachary had no other intentions. He only wanted to see Elena and personally welcome her back to Hupolis, as well as hand over the gift he had carefully prepared for her.
But he hadn’t expected her to misunderstand the situation.
Elena actually thought he was her future fiance.
At that moment, a shameful thought took root in his heart. Zachary’s hands trembled.
He told himself that it was fine. There were no real feelings between Elena and Alexander anyway. It was
just an arranged marriage.
If Zachary used this chance to pursue Elena and if she developed feelings for him, then it wouldn’t be
impossible to change her marriage partner to him…
Watching Elena return with Camila, Zachary clenched his hands tightly. This might be his only chance.
When many of the guests seemed to be getting tipsy, Elena ended the event and suggested that everyone

After saying their goodbyes, people gradually left. Camila’s mother, Mia Palmer, personally came to fetch
Camila.
“I knew she’d drink too much.” Mia sighed as she helped Camila into the car. Then, she turned to Elena with a helpless smile. “She’s never been particularly reliable when it came to these things.”
They chatted briefly before Mia also left.
Watching the car disappear into the distance, Elena smiled bitterly. Seeing Mia had reminded her of her own mother.
Samuel had also offered to pick Elena up tonight, but she had told him that it wasn’t necessary. She hadn’t touched any alcohol. Her stomach was still recovering, so she couldn’t drink.
Just as she was about to call her driver, she suddenly heard someone call out from behind her. “Ms.
Miller.”
Elena turned around and was surprised to see Zachary.
He was still here?
“Mr. Golden,” she greeted.
Zachary’s gaze was fixed firmly on her, and his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, as though he was enduring a fierce struggle inside. He didn’t speak for a long time.
Only when Elena started to look puzzled did Zachary finally manage to ask, “Would you like to take a walk together?”
Elena was slightly taken aback.
She thought of how the two of them carried the responsibility of their families’ arrangement. Since Zachary had taken the initiative to ask her, she couldn’t really refuse.
“Alright.” She nodded slightly.
The moment she agreed, a glimmer of hope appeared in Zachary’s eyes, but it faded just as quickly as it
appeared.
This moment, after all, was stolen.
He slowly walked to her side, and just as they were about to stroll along the roadside together, a car suddenly pulled up in front of them.
The instant Zachary recognized it, his expression changed drastically.
It was Alexander’s car.
