Chapter 68

A white car was waiting at the airport’s entrance. Elena immediately recognized it as one of her family’s

cars

The driver stood by the car, wearing white gloves. The moment he saw her, he respectfully greeted her,

Ms. Miller.”

Then, he took the suitcase from her hands and opened the car door for her.

Elena bent down and was just about to get in when she froze at the sight of the person inside. “Dad…”

A middle-aged man sat in the back seat with his head lowered over a document. He didn’t say a word, but

even his presence carried a quiet authority.

Elena dared to argue with him when they called or had video chats, but now, she shrank back timidly. She

slipped into the car cautiously, sneaking a glance at Samuel.

Samuel was still focused on the document, paying her no attention at all.

He hadn’t said that he would come to pick her up, so Elena hadn’t been mentally prepared for this at all. She had thought that she would only see him once she got home. Meeting him so suddenly filled her with

a bit of guilt.

After all, these past few years, she had been constantly at odds with Samuel over someone who wasn’t

worth it.

The driver stored her luggage, then started the car in silence as he drove them toward the Miller

residence. The atmosphere in the car was strangely still and quiet.

Elena occasionally stole a glance at Samuel. On the surface, he didn’t seem to have changed, but upon

closer inspection, he seemed to have more white hair. Samuel never said it, but Elena could tell that he

must have worried about her a lot.

Elena’s eyes reddened as she felt a surge of regret, but it was already too late to undo the past. All she could do was to stay by Samuel’s and Jane’s sides from now on and make up for those lost years.

After a while, Samuel finally set the document aside and asked, “Did you have a smooth trip?”

Elena nodded quickly. “Yes, it was very smooth.”

Samuel had intended to scold her, but seeing her like this made his heart soften.

“You silly girl.” He reached out and ruffled her hair.

Elena’s tears nearly spilled over. She remembered how things used to be when she was little. He would always pretend to be angry when she caused trouble but would eventually relent.

“Dad…” Elena’s voice trembled.

“Alright.” Samuel patted her hand. “You’re home now. Let’s not bring up the past anymore!”

“Okay.” Elena sniffled. “Is Grandma at home?”

“Of course. She talks about you every day. She’s been waiting for you in the living room since dawn. She wanted to come with me to meet you at the airport, but she caught a cold recently, so I didn’t let her. She was rather upset about that,” Samuel said.

Elena quickly asked, “Grandma has a cold? Is it serious?”

“It’s nothing major. She’s had medicine, and the doctor says she’ll be fine after a couple of days of rest,” Samuel replied.

“That’s good.” Elena nodded.

When the car reached the Miller residence, the ornate iron gates slowly opened.

As soon as Elena stepped out, she heard a familiar voice. “My precious granddaughter! Lena!”

Jane came hurrying forward with her head full of white hair and eyes glistening with tears.

“Grandma!” Elena threw herself into Jane’s arms. Jane smelled the same as always. It was both warm and reassuring.

Even though they would regularly chat on video calls over the years, the cold screen could never compare to seeing each other in person.

“Lena, Lena…” Jane held Elena tightly, filled with both joy and worry-joy because Elena was finally home, and worry because…

Jane cast a discreet glance at Elena’s right leg.

Elena was her only granddaughter, and Jane always noticed even the slightest change in Elena instantly.
