Chapter 66
Earlier, Elena hadn’t thought much of it. She had merely assumed that Alexander had been angry because Justin was pestering the Goldens’ arranged marriage candidate.
But now, looking at the ointment that he had gone out of his way to buy for her, she suddenly felt that things might not be so simple.
Alexander…
Elena’s feelings were very complicated at that moment.
She had never thought of herself as someone whom everyone loved, but Alexander had been giving her a lot of attention lately. There was no way she wouldn’t notice something unusual.
Was he really just being considerate and standing up for her because she was Zachary’s potential fiancee?
If only Alexander had been her arranged match.
The thought popped up so suddenly that it startled Elena herself. She quickly shook her head and forced that absurd notion away.
Something seemed to be quietly blooming in her heart, but she forcefully pushed it down.
She couldn’t allow this. If she did, it wouldn’t be fair to Zachary, whom she had been set up with.
Just then, a video call came in. Elena picked up her phone and saw that it was a call from Camila.
The moment the call connected, Camila’s playful face filled the screen. “Lena dear, it’s been years. Why do you look so worn out?”
Even Camila’s exaggerated tone couldn’t hide the genuine worry in her eyes.
Elena smiled. “No way. I just took a shower. Don’t I look radiant?”
Camila let it drop and changed the topic. “You’re heading back to Hupolis the day after tomorrow, right? I’ve got your welcome party all ready. We’re just waiting for the star of the show to come back!”
“Is that so? I won’t forgive you if it’s not grand enough,” Elena replied.
“Nonsense, I know you can’t bear to be apart from me,” Camila said.
They laughed together for a bit. Then, Camila leaned closer to the camera and said in a conspiratorial tone, “Lena, I just heard some gossip.”
“What gossip?” Elena asked casually while she got her face mask ready.
“It’s about the heir of the Golden family. You know, Alexander, Zachary’s cousin,” Camila said.
Elena’s hand paused mid-air with the mask, but she quickly forced herself to reply nonchalantly. “Of course, I know about him. What about him?”
Camila replied, “Apparently, he has a girlfriend!”
Elena remained silent as she froze in place.
But Camila didn’t notice her reaction and kept chattering. “Didn’t everyone say he had no interest in women? All these years, there’s never been a woman by his side. He’s never even had a girlfriend. Who would’ve thought he was secretly dating? But this is a fresh rumor, and no one knows if it’s true.”
By the time Camila finished rambling, Elena had regained her composure.
Elena said lightly, “You should stop listening to such gossip. And don’t talk behind people’s backs. You
don’t want to bring trouble on yourself.”
Camelia shrugged it off. “Don’t worry, I know. You’re the only one I’m telling. Alexander isn’t someone you
want to cross, and I definitely don’t plan on offending him.”
Elena applied her face mask, feeling unusually calm at that moment.
This was perfect. It seemed that she had just been mistaken earlier. If Alexander had a girlfriend, how could he possibly have feelings for her?
Clearly, Alexander was just looking out for his future cousin-in-law.
Elena thought she needed to adjust her mindset and just treat him like an older cousin too.
“Lena, did you put your mask on upside down?” Camila suddenly asked.
Snapping back to her senses, Elena realized she really had stuck it on wrong. The eyeholes were over her mouth.
She quickly pulled it off and coughed lightly. “That was just an accident.”
“You’re acting weird.” Camila narrowed her eyes on the screen. “It feels like there’s something on your mind.”
After a pause, she added, “Don’t tell me you’re still thinking about that Riggs guy? Lena, he’s not worth it.”
