Chapter 52

Nadine immediately rolled up her sleeve, revealing bruises across her arm.

Josephine cried out, “Oh my goodness, how did this happen? They actually hit you?”

“One of the women there was their leader. You’d get beaten up if you don’t listen to her…” Tears welled up in Nadine’s eyes as she looked at Justin. “Jus, how could you bear to let me suffer in there like that?”

“Of course I couldn’t,” Justin said.

He lowered his gaze and looked at her trembling shoulders. His knuckles curled up slightly. “I…”

He wanted to explain, but he didn’t know how.

Was he supposed to admit that he had tried and failed? Wouldn’t it be the same as admitting that he had

lost to Alexander?

Nadine said, “Jus, do you know how much I’ve missed you-”

Josephine’s expression stiffened, and she quickly cut in, “That’s enough! Nadi, don’t say things like that here. Let’s just go home first. I’ve had plenty of good food prepared for you…”

Justin shot her a glance and said, “Let’s get in the car.”

Then, he turned around and walked toward the car that was parked nearby.

Nadine bit her lip and followed Justin. After a few steps, she lowered her voice and asked Josephine,” Mom, what about Elena? What’s she been doing recently?”

Josephine sighed. “She’s been busy with work and hasn’t been home once. It looks like she’s still holding a grudge against you.”

Nadine’s expression twisted. “She’s holding a grudge against me? Shouldn’t I be the one who hates her? She stole Jus away from me and even caused me to end up in the holding cell. I wish she’d just die!”

Josephine said, “Enough. We’re still outside; you shouldn’t be so loud.”

Nadine asked, “Is Jus siding with her? Is that why he didn’t rescue me?”

Josephine explained, “No, how could you say that? He had no choice. Someone was secretly ruining his

attempts to bail you out.”

There was a vicious glint in Nadine’s eyes. “Who was stopping him? Was it Elena? No, it was Alexander,

wasn’t it?”

Josephine fell silent. Even though they hadn’t uncovered the truth yet, Josephine couldn’t think of anyone

who could do it apart from Alexander.

“I see.” Nadine stared at Justin’s back and deliberately raised her voice. “Elena is such a shameless

woman! She must have seduced Alexander. Otherwise, why would he stick his neck out for her for no reason?”

The moment she said that, Justin suddenly stopped and turned around, glaring at her.

Nadine was so startled by his glare that she shrank back. She had wanted to keep cursing Elena, but the words got stuck in her throat.

At that moment, Justin suddenly realized that he was being too harsh to Nadine. After all, she had just gotten out of detention and was in a fragile state. How could he roar at her like that?

So, he softened his expression. “You shouldn’t speak so carelessly. Get in the car and let’s go home.”

Nadine could only pout unhappily.

Once they were inside the car, she sulked and refused to talk to Justin.

Seeing this, Josephine tried to comfort Nadine. “Alright, don’t be mad at Justin. There was really nothing he could do this time. Think about it-hasn’t he always shielded you whenever you got into trouble? Remember back then…”

She almost mentioned Elena’s car accident two years ago, which Justin had covered up for Nadine’s sake.

But after thinking about it, she quickly decided against it. “Remember how that girl you bullied in high school leaked the video? So many people were cursing at you, but he was the one who cleaned up that mess for you in the end.”

Nadine retorted, “That was years ago. Why would you bring it up?”

“I just want to tell you that Justin would never abandon you. No matter what, he’ll always be your brother,” Josephine said meaningfully.

She didn’t want any conflict between Justin and Nadine, but she wanted even less for their relationship to

cross a line it never should.
