Chapter 49
Justin said, “You don’t know about that yet. Nadi didn’t want you to worry, so she never let me tell you.
Her ex-husband was a psychopath. He started abusing her not long after they got married, so she’s
suffered a lot.”
Josephine suddenly went quiet. After a long pause, she asked, “Did Nadi tell you that?”
Justin replied, “Yes. What’s wrong?”
Josephine said, “It’s nothing. Since Elena doesn’t want to come back, just let her be for now. Hurry home
for dinner.”
Justin suddenly had no desire to go home. He said, “You go ahead and eat first. I’ve got something to take care of, so I’ll be back later.”
After hanging up, his eyes once again fell on the direction Alexander’s car had gone.
Did Alexander really think he had won? He could dream on! Justin was the only man in Elena’s heart, and Alexander was nothing more than a tool she was using to spite him.
Justin firmly believed that Elena would come back to his side sooner or later.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere in Alexander’s car was somewhat strange.
Alfred was quietly driving the car up front, while Alexander and Elena sat together in the back. But neither of them spoke, and Elena kept her head turned toward the scenery outside the window.
In the end, it was Alexander who broke the silence. “Have you had your dinner?”
Elena actually hadn’t eaten, but she lied. “Yes, I’ve had my dinner.”
She was supposed to be engaged to Zachary and that made her feel awkward around Alexander.
Alexander glanced at her with a complicated expression, as if he had seen through her lie. But he didn’t press her. Instead, he simply said to Alfred, “Take Ms. Miller home.”
“Yes, Mr. Golden.” Alfred clearly knew Elena’s address and immediately changed direction.
Elena’s phone buzzed. She looked down to see a message from Camila.
“Lena, can you believe this? I ran into Zachary this afternoon, and he gave me two tickets to his exhibition!

Elena’s lashes fluttered slightly.
Camila sent her another message. “He must know we’re close. He probably gave me two tickets because he wants us to go together! Say, could it be that he’s already into you?”
Elena typed out a reply. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
She had only met Zachary a handful of times and barely exchanged a few words with him. How could that
be possible?
Another message from Camila came in. “Lena, you really underestimate your own charm. If I were a man, I’d definitely fall for you.”
Elena replied, “If you were a man, it wouldn’t matter if you liked me. I would never like you back.”
Camila messaged. “Wow, you’ve broken my heart! It’s my birthday today; can’t you at least say something
nice?”
Elena smiled. “Nope.”
“Bad Lena!” Camila retorted.
The two of them joked around for a bit before Camila ended the conversation, saying she was going out.
Looking at Zachary’s name on the screen, Elena couldn’t help but turn to Alexander. “Mr. Golden, there’s something I want to ask you.”
“Go ahead,” Alexander said calmly.
Elena asked, “Do you know about the marriage arrangement between the Miller and the Golden families?”
Alexander’s eyes flickered at that, but he still replied in an even tone. “Yes, I do.”
Elena fell silent and didn’t speak again.
Truthfully, she didn’t feel much at that moment.
Of course, since she was to be engaged to Zachary, they would very likely become family in the future. It
wasn’t unusual for Alexander to show a little extra care toward his future cousin-in-law.
Elena stayed quiet, but Alexander suddenly asked, “And what do you think about this arrangement?” The question caught Elena off guard. “What? What I think…”
