Chapter 44
As Justin spoke, his gaze dropped to Elena’s red lips. He raised his hand, as if wanting to touch them.
She turned her head away. Facing the shameless man before her, she chuckled and lifted her foot to kick
him.
“You!”
He was quick to react, though. In an instant, he let go of her and stepped back, just in time for her kick to
miss.
“Are you crazy?” he barked.
“You’re the one who’s crazy,” she replied, straightening her clothes, where he had rumpled them. “You
were about to lay hands on your secretary in your office. Mr. Riggs, if word gets out, what do you think will happen to your reputation and Riggs Group’s image?”
Staring at her icy expression, he couldn’t help but gulp. He then blurted, “You’re not just my secretary. You’re still my…
“Enough.” She cut him off.
Bitterness flickered across his face. “Do you remember what tomorrow is?”
She kept her face straight and said nothing. Of course, she remembered, but thinking about that day only
made her sick.
“Tomorrow’s the anniversary of my first confession to you…” He went on, as if lost in fond memories. “! still remember how you turned me down with that little smile. I thought you were so adorable, and I liked you very much. So, I told myself not to give up.”
It was true. She had turned him down the first time he confessed.
Back then, she was known as the prettiest girl on campus, and from her very first year, suitors had lined up for her heart. Yet Elena had never said yes to anyone. When Justin confessed, she rejected him as well.
No one expected her to turn him down. After all, Justin was a campus star. He was not only good-looking, but he also came from a wealthy family. Many thought he and Elena were a perfect match.
At the time, she truly didn’t like him. She had no intention of stringing anyone along, so she rejected him
outright.
Justin, however, refused to give up. He pursued her for over half a year. Gradually, she developed feelings
for him, and at last, she agreed to be with him.
After they got together, Justin claimed his first confession as an occasion. He insisted it should be a day to remember. So, every year afterward, they would celebrate the day, and he would shower her with gifts…
“Lena, I’ve already prepared your anniversary gift. You’re going to love it,” he said with a gentle smile.
She had no interest in knowing what it was. What came to her mind instead was Nadine’s words she had
overheard that night.
“If I hadn’t had a falling out with Jus, how would he have ended up confessing to Elena out of spite?”
Nadine had said.
So, the only reason Justin had confessed back then was because of a quarrel with Nadine. He could have given up when she first rejected him, but he chose to deceive her and ultimately drag her into the abyss.
Elena clenched her fists.
“Lena, so much has happened lately. We’re both tired. Let’s stop fighting, okay?”
He continued to pacify her, saying, “Nadi had it coming. She’s spent all these days in the holding cell. She must’ve learned her lesson. I know you’re jealous because I’ve always treated her well. That’s why you
insist on pressing charges.”
Elena snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him with disdain, speechless.
