Chapter 41

Wait a second… Could Elena be acting out of jealousy right now?

Justin’s eyes suddenly lit up.

The only reason she was so determined to press charges against Nadine must be because he had been treating Nadine too well lately, and Elena was envious.

That could only mean that she still cared about him. The more he thought about it, the more he thought it made sense. His mood instantly lifted.

After all, Elena had always been sensible. Why would she suddenly behave like this otherwise? So, it was

all because she cared.

“Justin, what are you smiling at?” His buddy looked at him, confused.

Justin froze. “Was I smiling?”

“Yeah, and pretty happily too,” his friend answered.

Justin grunted, but there was no denying it. He felt better now.

Meanwhile, in a certain villa, Alexander was sitting in his study, reading the documents his men just sent

over.

Two years ago, Elena was involved in a car accident, which crippled her right leg…

His gaze darkened.

The day when he ran into her at the restaurant and saw her doubled over with stomach cramps, he had already noticed something unusual about her right leg. She might appear no different from anyone else, but the flaw was there if one were to look closely.

At first, he thought it was because of the stomach cramps, but even after the pain eased, her right leg still looked somewhat off. That was when he realized something was wrong.

It was also why he had asked his mother to reach out to that doctor. However, they still hadn’t been able

to get in touch.

As for the car accident, it had ultimately been ruled an accident, and no foul play was involved. The driver

had taken full responsibility and turned himself in. He was sentenced to prison, but a year ago, he

committed suicide behind bars.

Could it really be that simple? Judging by Elena’s expression, it was definitely not.

Alexander read on. The document stated that Elena had been in a relationship with Justin for five years, and that just a few days ago, they had gotten a marriage certificate.

Nonetheless, his men uncovered the truth that the certificate was actually fake. Instead, Justin had long since registered a real marriage with his adopted sister, Nadine.

So, Elena must have found out. That was why she had been so determined to break things off with Justin.

Alexander’s fingertips brushed over the words “car accident” on the page. Moonlight lingered on the curve of his lips, and the sandalwood in the air thickened into something oppressive.

In these five years, just how much had Elena endured at Justin’s hands? After the car accident two years ago, how much pain had she suffered?

A dull ache stirred in his heart.

He rose and headed toward the door. He wanted to see Elena at the hospital, but as he reached the

doorway, he stopped.

At this hour, she was surely already asleep. If he went now, she would only find it strange, maybe even

feel disturbed.

He lingered a moment before letting out a helpless laugh at himself. Who would have thought he could lose his composure like this?

Returning to his desk, he dialed a number and instructed, “Look into Ms. Miller’s accident two years ago.

Find out whether it was truly an accident or someone was behind it.”

“Yes, Mr. Golden.”

He had come into her life too late, but that was fine. From now on, he would always be there to protect her
