Chapter 40
Nadine almost lost her mind.
She had never suffered such humiliation in her lifetime, but it didn’t matter. She only needed to endure it for a while longer. She believed that Justin would surely find a way to rescue her…
After Nadine was taken away, Josephine panicked. She kept calling Justin, but he never picked up. More than two hours later, he finally returned her call.

“Mom, what’s wrong?”
Through the phone, she could hear blaring music, the noise of men drinking and shouting over games,
and even women’s playful, coquettish voices.
“Where are you?” she snapped.
Justin stayed silent for a moment before answering, “I’m just out with some friends.”
“Nadine’s been arrested, and you still have the mood to party outside?”
“What?” he croaked. “What happened?”
“It’s all because of Elena!” Josephine yelled.
“She’s really going this far, huh?” said Justin, a throb rising in his temples.
He had not reached out to Elena all day because he was waiting for her to come to him and apologize,
but the entire day passed, and there was no sign of her.
He even tried asking one of her colleagues who had visited her that afternoon, probing to see if Elena had
mentioned him in their conversation. The answer had been no.
Very well. She was truly something.
Annoyed by her disappearance, he had called up a few of his buddies to drink together. They brought along several hostesses to keep them company, but he hadn’t touched a single one. He had no interest in
them.
After two glasses of alcohol, he unconsciously reached for his phone to call Elena, to explain where he
was. He nearly pressed the dial button before he remembered they were still in the middle of a cold war.
The thought made him more restless. He tossed his phone aside and decided not to answer her call,
even if she called him later.
Two hours of drinking and playing passed. When he picked up his phone again, he felt a faint trace of
expectation rising in his chest. He hoped to see missed calls from Elena, or at least a message from her.
There was nothing from her, except several missed calls from Josephine.
It seemed Elena had decided to pursue this matter.
“She’s gone too far with this. Nadine grew up pampered. How could she possibly endure a place like the holding cell?” Josephine sobbed, “For something so minor, did Elena really need to blow it out of proportion like this? Besides, didn’t you say you’d take care of it? Why’s Nadine still…”
“I…”
Justin had no idea what to say.
Truthfully, before hearing it from Josephine, he had assumed Elena was only sulking. He never thought
she would actually press charges against Nadine. That was why he had done nothing.
Unbelievably, Elena went through with it. Was she really okay with making him angry? Was she not afraid he might cut her off completely?
“Enough, Mom. Stop crying,” he said, forcing down his irritation. “It’s not too late to fix this. It’s not even
that serious.”
“I don’t care. Hurry and get Nadine out!” demanded Josephine.
“Don’t worry,” Justin assured before ending the call.
He immediately phoned his men, ordering them to bail Nadine out. He should have gone himself. Part of him was worried about her, but for some reason, unease gnawed at him. So, he pushed the matter onto someone else instead.
After hanging up, he leaned back on the sofa with a heavy sigh.
“Justin, what’s wrong?” One of his buddies leaned in and said, “You look like you’ve got something on your
mind.”
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, the man teased, “What is it? Did your precious little sister
return from overseas and start fighting with your girlfriend for your attention? And now you’re caught in
the middle?”
His friends all knew something about his situation with Nadine. Of course, none of them would ever
breathe a word to Elena.
At the remark, Justin let out a bitter smile. If only it were that simple.
