Chapter 35
Elena didn’t understand what Alexander meant when he said he wasn’t a good man.
Before she could ask, the nurse at the door called out softly, greeting them with cautious politeness.
Alexander rose to his feet. “Get some rest. I’ll head out now.”
After speaking, he turned to leave.
As he passed by the nurse, he cast her a glance. She quickly nodded in panic, practically swearing she would take good care of Elena.
Walking out of the hospital, Alexander got into his car. Remembering Elena’s words from earlier, he let out a short, cold laugh.
When she called him a good man, he wondered if she thought he treated everyone with the same care
and patience.
“Foolish girl,” he muttered.
Meanwhile, on the drive back, the Riggs family’s car was filled with tension.
“Mom, Jus, is Elena really going to sue me?” Nadine asked, her face drawn. “Has she lost her mind?”
Josephine sighed. “Exactly! She’s being completely unreasonable. It was nothing but a little squabble, but she had to blow it out of proportion. And to make it worse, she said it in front of outsiders, without showing Justin the slightest respect.”
Justin’s expression was already dark, and hearing those words made his face grow even gloomier. The air in the car felt stifling and hot.
He rolled down the window, letting the cool night breeze wash over him until he felt somewhat calmer.
“Justin, what’s going on with Elena? I can’t shake the feeling that she’s changed so much… She used to have eyes only for you, but now she treats you like someone she barely knows. And that Mr. Golden-how on earth does she even know him?”
“I don’t know,” Justin said, his tone clipped and cold.
“Jus, are you jealous? Really, now of all times? Elena wants to sue me. What am I supposed to do?”
Nadine began to cry.
Justin’s patience thinned. “She’s only got minor injuries. At worst, you’ll be held for a few days-”
Before he could finish speaking, Nadine’s sobs reached his ears, and his resolve softened once again.
“Don’t worry. I’ll find a way.”
“You shouldn’t have left earlier. You should have stayed by Elena’s side.” Josephine fretted.
“Stayed for what? With the way she spoke to me, why would I chase after her?”
Justin’s expression darkened. “I’ve been too good to her lately, and now she thinks she can walk all over
me.”
After saying that, he convinced himself he was right. His constant pampering of Elena lately must have made her think she could push him around, tossing out talk of breakups and divorce as if it meant nothing.
As long as he gave her the cold shoulder for a few days, she would be scared and come back, admitting
she was wrong.
With that thought, his mood lifted.
“Jus, since Elena already brought up breaking up, why don’t you just go through with it?” Nadine suddenly
suggested.
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Josephine snapped at her.
“Oh, Mom, just let me speak. Jus, you should…”
“Mom’s right. Don’t say ridiculous things,” Justin said, frowning.
“Lena’s already caused me enough trouble. Don’t make it worse for me, or I won’t take responsibility for
your mess.”
Nadine bit her lower lip tightly.
Before, when Justin refused to talk about breaking up with Elena, she could comfort herself by thinking he
still cared about their past.
But now, with Elena acting that way and even bringing up breaking up herself, Justin still refused to agree.
He had said before that Elena couldn’t even compare to her, yet now his actions made no sense.
Nadine was furious but dared not say anything more, especially since Justin still needed to handle the mess she had caused by deliberately pushing Elena and giving her a mild concussion.
She lowered her head, pulled out her phone, found a video clip, and uploaded it to a popular social media
platform.
It was a dance video she had recorded before.
Watching herself move gracefully on the screen, a smug smile tugged at Nadine’s lips.
She thought, “Elena, now that you can’t dance, how do you even compare to me?”
