Chapter 19

Elena felt a jolt in her chest.

She couldn’t believe Alexander had brought up the most awkward topic at exactly the worst moment.

“Last night… I’m sorry,” Alexander said.

Elena blinked, then smiled lightly. “It’s fine. Last night was a special situation. It’s not your fault.”

It was a little awkward, but she never intended to blame Alexander. After all, he was a victim too.

“Have they found the person who tried to hurt you?” she asked.

Alexander nodded and replied, “Yes No need to worry.”

It was a competitor of the Golden Group who had secretly sent someone from Hupolis to spy on him.

They had learned that Alexander would be dining at that restaurant the previous night and bribed a waiter to tamper with his drink. The original plan was to wait for the drug to take effect, have someone abduct him, and then set him up with a woman to falsely accuse him of forcing himself on her.

Unexpectedly, he realized he had been drugged and left ahead of time.

Fortunately, he was the only one who drank the tampered beverage. Everyone else’s drinks were untouched, so no one else was affected.

Luckily, the drug had no serious side effects, and his strong constitution helped him recover quickly. After having a gastric lavage, receiving IV fluids, and resting through the night, he was now completely fine.

He didn’t elaborate, and Elena didn’t press further.

She only murmured, “That’s good.”

“Besides apologizing, I should properly thank you,” Alexander said. His gaze lingered on her with unspoken emotion. “I owe you… for last night.”

“It’s nothing.”

Elena shook her head and said, “You’ve helped me before, and just now you saved me again. Otherwise, I would have…”

At that, her face went pale, and she didn’t say another word.

Alexander’s gaze flicked over her right leg. His expression was unreadable. He already suspected the truth but chose not to say anything, knowing it was a wound she carried in her heart. He was unwilling to drive the knife any deeper.

“Have you had breakfast?” he asked, changing the subject.

“Not yet,” she replied instinctively.

She got the call first thing in the morning before breakfast and came straight to the hospital.

“Neither have I,” Alexander said, picking up his coat.

“Come on, Ms. Miller. To celebrate the fact that we both survived, I’ll treat you to breakfast.”

His solemn tone carried a strangely dry sense of humor, and Elena couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Then I won’t refuse, Mr. Golden.”

Alexander’s expression remained neutral, but as he turned, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

The car stopped in front of a fine-dining restaurant at the foot of a hill. Elena had heard of this place before-its breakfast menu was rumored to be exceptional, but the owner was known for being

temperamental. Breakfast wasn’t served every day, and sometimes the portions were limited.

The more exclusive a place seemed, the more it piqued curiosity.

Elena had never been here before.

After all, she was always running around for work, and whenever she had a spare moment, she just

wanted to rest. There was hardly ever time to purposely go out to have breakfast:

Alexander opened the car door for her, and the crisp morning air, scented with mist and dew, washed

over them.

Elena looked at the restaurant’s entrance. Its dark brick and slate roof glistened in the early morning fog.

The sign above, “Mistwood Manor,” blurred by the morning haze, looked like a delicate watercolor

painting.

Before they could step inside, a middle-aged man named Kaysen Burton came out to greet them. “Mr. Golden, long time no see,” he said with a smile.

“The last time you visited my place was three years ago, wasn’t it?”

“It’s been a long time,” Alexander replied and nodded slightly.

Kaysen’s gaze shifted to Elena. His eyebrows were raised in mild surprise. “Mr. Golden, this is…?”

He had wanted to ask if she was Alexander’s girlfriend, but worried it might be too forward if he guessed wrong. Still, the two of them looked perfectly suited for each other.
