Chapter 4
William slumped to the floor after hearing me say “divorce,” frozen in place for a long moment.
His mother flushed crimson, shrieking in rage.
“You dare demand divorce?! A divorced woman is damaged goods!”
“You’re jobless after losing the baby-who’d want you now? My William hasn’t discarded you, yet you put on airs! Shameless!”
I snorted coldly. This ungrateful mother-in-law didn’t deserve another scrap of my kindness.
William finally snapped back to reality, gaping at me in disbelief. “Diana, are you serious? Just because Mom told you to tend to Chenchen?”
I nearly laughed. “Yes. Exactly that.”
“And wasn’t your mother eloquent? I’m damaged goods now-unworthy of a chief physician like you.”
“Let’s divorce. Enjoy life with your little nurse.”
Panic flashed in William’s eyes as he registered my resolve.
His mother cursed under her breath at his hesitation-why cling to a woman who’d lost his child?
“Son! Grant her wish! She’ll come crawling back when she’s homeless!”
I almost chuckled. Without me, this family wouldn’t even have a roof. We’d see who ended up destitute.
“Mom! Don’t say that! Diana and I have years of history!” William stammered, turning to me. “Don’t be rash- Chenchen will call you Mom someday! Shirley was just…”
I lifted my gaze toward Shirley standing pale-faced at the doorway.
Kicking away William’s reaching arms, I tilted my chin toward her.
“Your precious Shirley’s about to cry. Shouldn’t you comfort her?”
He froze mid-step, whirling around.
Shirley chose that moment to wipe her tears and dash out.
“Shirley!” William yelled desperately at her thin nightgown vanishing down the hall.
His mother shoved him frantically-this was her ideal daughter-in-law: obedient, fertile, sweet-tongued.
“Chase her! She just gave you a healthy boy! Why cling to this useless-”

Chapter 4
“If anything happens to my Shirley, I’ll never forgive you!”
I watched the chaos from the bed, cold amusement curling my lips. William, forever weak-willed yet convinced of his cleverness.
Countless times I’d cleaned up messes from his inability to say no.
His agonized indecision hung thick in the air.
I fanned the flames: “William, walk out that door now, and we divorce immediately. No discussion.”
