Chapter 5 

Then, he walked straight to the front desk and booked the largest ballroom. 

I sat in the lobby, waiting, when a mocking voice cut through the air. 

“Emma, seriously? You’re already backing down?” 

“Yesterday, you were acting all tough, even locked me out of your place.” 

“And now, just a few hours later, you’re sneaking around following me?” 

“What, you here to apologize?” 

Talk about bad luck. 

Dylan and his crew strolled into the lobby. 

I shot him a cold glance and said nothing. 

Clearly, that bruised his ego, because the next second, he stormed over, fuming. 

“I’m talking to you! You deaf or something?” 

“You think stalking me is gonna make me forgive you?” 

Hailey, always the instigator, chimed in. 

“Dylan, I swear, Emma never learns her lesson.” 

“You better teach her a good one this time–don’t let her off so easy!” 

“She should kneel right here and apologize until you’re satisfied.”

I was just about to push back when Dylan suddenly yanked my arm, forcing me down. 

Everyone around us wore smug, amused expressions, waiting for the show to begin. 

His so–called friends even started placing bets. 

“Let’s bet–will Emma kneel or not?” 

“Come on, we already know the answer.” 

“She’s a total pick–me. What’s there to bet on?” 

Dylan looked down at me, smug as ever. 

“Emma, don’t blame me. This is just your punishment for disobeying me.” 

Luckily, the hotel manager arrived just in time, and the whole thing didn’t escalate further. 

But in the end, nothing really came of it. 

Hailey gave me a scornful look. 

“Well, lucky you, I guess. But you won’t always be this lucky.”

“Why don’t you just make Dylan happy?” 

“If he stays mad, your life won’t get any easier.” 

The crowd jumped in, echoing her words. 

“Yeah, it’s your fault he’s pissed. Fix it, Emma. It’s your job!” 

Dylan smirked, tilting his chin up. 

“Since everyone’s sticking up for you, I’ll be nice and give you one last chance to make it up to me.” 

“Otherwise, good luck ever getting me to forgive you again.” 

His smug, self–satisfied tone was so disgusting. I almost gagged. 

Yeah, they weren’t gonna let me off easy today. 

I lifted my head and shook it slightly, stopping Logan–who was already ready to step in for me. 

Seven years with Dylan. 

It was time to end this on my terms. 

Right then and there, in front of everyone, I blocked his number, unfollowed him on every social platform, and erased every single contact I had added because of him. 

I turned to Dylan with a mocking smile. 

“Clear enough for you? Need me to spell it out?”

“I’ve said it before, but since you just can’t seem to get it through your head, let me make it crystal clear–this is over.” 

“I’m done playing whatever game you think this is.” 

“So do me a favor and stay the hell out of my life.”

His arrogant smirk faded, his face stiffening, a flicker of panic flashing in his eyes. 

Like he never in a million years expected me to flip the script. 

“Dylan, you make me sick.” 

With that, I turned and walked straight out of the hotel. 

He stood frozen in place, like a statue, like the weight of reality had just cemented him to the ground. 

Behind me, his friends buzzed with disbelief, 

“No way. She actually dumped him?” 

“She’s bluffing. Emma’s just trying to guilt–trip him into taking her back.” 

“Doesn’t seem like it. She blocked him/deleted all their contacts–she’s serious.” 

“Impossible. She’s been obsessed with Dylan for years.” 

“No way she just walks away like that.”

The murmurs made Dylan’s head pound. 

Sure, he’d heard Emma say she wanted to break up before. 

But he’d always been convinced it was just a ploy to get him to beg her to stay. 

After all, for seven years, she had worshiped him. 

But now, for the first time, Dylan finally felt the weight of what she had done. 

Hailey, meanwhile, was practically beaming. 

She fake–coughed and said, 

“Don’t worry, Dylan. Emma loves you too much to actually leave.” 

“She’s just mad. Give it a few days–she’ll come crawling back.” 

For the first time, Dylan caught the hint of manipulation in Hailey’s voice. 

But his pride was too big to back down now. 

He clenched his jaw, his expression dark. 

“She dares to talk to me like that? Just wait. She’ll regret this.” 

He shot a look in the direction Emma had gone. 

Just in time to see her step into a black car and drive away, disappearing into the distance. 

Dylan suddenly felt a sharp tug in his chest. 

It was like she was really gone. 

I got into Logan’s car and immediately noticed the icy expression on his face. 

His long fingers tapped impatiently against the steering wheel. 

I let out an awkward chuckle, fully aware of what he was upset about. 

Carefully, I reached out and poked his shoulder.
