Chapter 4
The entire table fell silent.
Olivia’s eyes widened. Brandon snapped his head up. “What did you just say?”
Evelyn stood. “I’m done eating. Enjoy your meal.”
She turned to head upstairs. Behind her, Olivia muttered, “Did she take the wrong pills or something?”
Just as she reached the stairs, Brandon rushed after her and grabbed her arm. “What did you mean by that
just now?”
Evelyn looked back at him. “You said you’re planning a wedding. I said I agree.
Brandon’s brows tightened. “That’s just for show! My mom just got out of the hospital–I don’t want her
upset.”
“Sure,” Evelyn nodded. “Do whatever you want.”
Brandon stared into her eyes, as if trying to read something there. After a moment, he said in a low voice, “Don’t worry. I’ll cancel the divorce application before the reflection period ends.”
Evelyn smiled faintly. “Alright.”
Brandon breathed a quiet sigh of relief and reached out to stroke her hair.
“Good girl.” he murmured.
She turned her head to dodge his hand, a trace of cold amusement flickering in her eyes.
Then she headed upstairs.
Brandon stood there, watching her back disappear up the staircase, a strange unease tightening in his chest.
The next morning, Brandon had already left for work when Evelyn emerged from the guest room.
Downstairs, Olivia was already seated at the table, tapping her fingers on the wood with irritation. The
moment she saw Evelyn coming down, her tone turned icy,
“What are you standing there for? Get moving and help me wash up!”
Normally, Evelyn would’ve jumped into help fetching hot water, kneeling by the armchair to wipe Olivia’s face, fix her hair, even help her slip into shoes.
But today, she simply cast a brief glance her way, then walked into the kitchen, poured herself a glass of milk, and slowly toasted a slice of bread.

Olivia’s face darkened. “Are you deal?”
Vanessa rushed to smooth things over. “Let me help you, Mrs. Caldwell.”
She crouched beside Olivia, movements stiff and unfamiliar as she wiped her face, her brow barely twitching
with irritation.
Evelyn sat quietly, sipping her milk as she watched the clumsy performance unfold across the room.
Suddenly, she felt ridiculous.
She’d waited on Olivia hand and foot for two years. Served her tea, cleaned up after her, fed her, even when Olivia spat food at her on purpose–she smiled and cleaned it up without complaint.
And now, Vanessa could barely manage a simple wipe without frowning.
Yet Olivia didn’t notice a thing. She even patted Vanessa’s hand with false affection. “Such a considerate
girl.”
After breakfast, Olivia suddenly said she wanted to go out and get some sun.
“Evelyn. Wheelchair,” she ordered.
Evelyn set her cup down and replied lightly, “Didn’t you say Vanessa was great at caregiving? Let her do it.
She should be perfect for the job.”
Olivia’s face stiffened. Vanessa froze too.
“You-” Olivia was just about to explode, but Vanessa quickly stepped in with a smile. “It’s okay, Mrs. Caldwell. I’ll push you.”
Olivia gave a cold snort, reluctantly accepting it.
The three of them went outside. Vanessa pushed the wheelchair, Evelyn walking alongside them.
As they reached the sloped pavement near the street, Vanessa let out a dramatic “Oops!” and pretended to slip, shoving Evelyn forward with a not–so–accidental push. Caught off guard, Evelyn stumbled forward,
elbow hitting the wheelchair’s handle.
The chair jolted violently–then began rolling down the slope.
“Mom!” Evelyn’s pupils shrank as she instinctively lunged forward to grab the handles.
But just as her fingers brushed the edge-
Olivia twisted in her chair and shoved her backward, hard.

“Get your hands off me!”
Evelyn lost her balance and fell, tumbling straight into the middle of the road.
Bang-!
A piercing screech of brakes.
Her body snapped upward, then crashed onto the asphalt with a bone–jarring thud.
Pain exploded through every nerve, her consciousness slipping fast.
And in that final moment before darkness, she saw Vanessa at the curb, one hand gripping the wheelchair-
the other lifting slightly, as if waving goodbye. She is smirking.
