Chapter 66
Eugene had not looked at Hayden once throughout the entire conversation. The only time he deigned to look at Hayden was just before leaving. Even then, the way he looked at Hayden was filled with killing
intent.
Hayden noticed the car keys Eugene held in his hand. It was for a limited edition Rolls–Royce worth ten million dollars. He was surprised to learn that someone who worked as Shawn’s assistant was driving such a high–end vehicle.
He remembered that Nicole’s family merely dealt in jewelry distribution. They were certainly not some rich and powerful household.
He held back his doubts and said, “Nicky, could you let Caleb leave to deal with his business now?”
“Who’s stopping him?” Nicole glanced at Caleb coldly.
Caleb froze where he stood upon hearing this. Her comeback had left him speechless, and he left in
defeat.
When everyone had left the suite, Hayden pulled a chair and sat down by Nicole’s bed.
“Nicky, did your brother’s assistant misunderstand anything?”
She narrowed her eyes and looked at him expressionlessly. “You mean to ask if he has misunderstood
you?”
“Yes. You know it’s not that I didn’t want to give you that piece of land. I just wanted to wait for another half a month since the land wasn’t going anywhere anyway.
“And about Caleb, it was you who said you wanted to deal with him yourself. That’s why I didn’t stop my collaborations with the Gibson family.
“Eugene seems to think that I did nothing and left you to fend for yourself, though.” The more he spoke, the more helpless he sounded.
But after he was done, all he did was smile at her. “Will you help me explain things to him?”
Nicole’s gaze darkened. Hayden never gave her the land when he promised to, and his way of dealing with Caleb meant that he would only discontinue his collaborations with the Gibson family.
Outwardly, it looked like he was standing up for Nicole. But in reality, she didn’t get the land she was promised, and Caleb hadn’t paid the price for his actions.
At most, the Gibson family would have lost a few million–dollar orders, which was nothing to them. Didn’t that basically mean Hayden had done nothing at all?
She couldn’t be bothered to argue with him and cut him off. “I’m not in a good mood right now. I don’t
want to talk about it.”

“Alright, then.” He smiled indulgently.
“Then, could we talk about your brother? I remember that he was only ever a jewelry dealer, but his assistant is driving a Rolls–Royce. Do dealers earn that much money?”
There was a certain coldness in her gaze. It was true that she hadn’t specifically mentioned that her
brother owned a jewelry company.
For one, she didn’t want to be too high–profile, and for another, Hayden had assumed from the start that
she came from an ordinary family.
Since she hadn’t planned to stay overseas and inherit the company with her brother, there was no need
for an explanation.
Even if Nicole were to tell everyone that she was a wealthy heiress to a jewelry company who had
married beneath her, it would only be when she was about to leave.
“I’m not sure about my brother’s business. I’m tired and want to go to sleep now. Why don’t you just leave?
I don’t need you here with me.” She lay down and effectively rejected any other means of communication.
Ultimately, Hayden got nothing out of the conversation. He got up and said, “Matt knows that you’re not feeling well, and he wants to accompany you.”
“There’s no need for that. I don’t want to see him.” Nicole refused without hesitation.
Hayden realized that she still had strong opinions about Matthew, and thus, he simply turned and left.
Not long after he was gone, Eugene brought some food for Nicole and even gave her a new phone to use.
“Since you’re going to leave sooner or later, I got you an overseas SIM card. You won’t be staying in the country for long anyway. You don’t mind, do you?”
She turned on the phone and smiled. “Of course not. By the way, when are you leaving?”
“Tomorrow afternoon. Why? Being this frail, you’d better not see me off.” He gently patted her head.
Nicole gave it some thought and recalled that Shawn liked watches. Before she left the country, she
intended to buy him a gift.
“I want to buy my brother a watch. I’ll go shopping at the mall tomorrow morning, and you can bring it to him for me once you’ve returned.”
Eugene was surprised to hear this. “Are you in any shape to leave the hospital and go shopping?”
“I’ll be fine. I’ll just get a good night’s rest.” Nicole offered a faint, dismissive smile after speaking.
What she didn’t know was that someone was eavesdropping from outside the suite.
