Chapter 57

Jeremiah shut the ward door and opened up Nicole’s report again. “The shock and damage to your brain were quite bad this time.”
Nicole curled her fingers. Though she’d mentally prepared herself, it was still harrowing to actually listen
to Jeremiah say it out loud.
She forced a smile. “Please just tell me how long I need to rest before I can leave.”
Jeremiah was silent for a moment before saying, “You need to stay here and rest for seven days.
Otherwise, who knows what other accidents you might run into?”
Nicole’s hands balled into fists. There was danger everywhere. Even if she’d dealt with Caleb, it was still
hard to guarantee she’d be accident–free. Staying at the hospital was indeed her best option.
Nicole sighed softly, feeling absolutely drained.
She tried saying something, but Jeremiah couldn’t hear her clearly. He leaned in at the head of the bed.” What did you just say?”
Nicole tried her best to speak up. “My phone…”
Someone suddenly barged into the hospital ward before Jeremiah could react.
“What are you two doing?” Hayden roared, marching over and pulling Jeremiah away.
Jeremy stumbled back from the force, slamming into the window. His coat nearly fell off from the force.
“Dr. Petersen…” Nicole called out worriedly.
Hayden immediately blocked her view of Jeremiah before she could finish speaking.
“Why were you two leaning so close to each other earlier?” Hayden asked with a furrowed brow.
“I was only checking on her! Can you please see how weak your beloved wife is before you start questioning me?” Jeremiah snapped while smoothing out his coat, fed up with Hayden’s attitude.
Hayden then returned to his senses. He held Nicole’s hand, his demeanor softening immediately. “I heard them say you passed out, Nicky. What happened? Why were you at a bar so late at night?”
Nicole lay in bed, devoid of the strength to fling his hand away.
If she hadn’t been told that Hayden was in trouble, she wouldn’t have gone to the bar in the first place, nor would she have been trapped in that bathroom.
She closed her eyes and said weakly, “Why don’t you ask your best friend, Caleb? Ask him why he tricked me into going to the bar and hiring some men to mess with me.”
Hayden’s gaze darkened instantly. “Caleb was the one who caused this to happen to you?”

“Yes.” Nicole stared back at him. “What are you going to do about it?”
Hayden gripped her hand tightly. “I’ll have Caleb apologize and make it up to you.”
“That’s it?” Nicole’s tone was sarcastic.
Hayden shook his head. “No. I’ll cut off the company’s partnership with the Gibson family.”
“That’s not enough.” Nicole used all her strength to pull her hand back from Hayden’s grasp.
Was losing a partnership and offering some pointless apology enough for Nicole to let this go? Hell no.
Nicole could’ve left the country already. But because of Caleb, she now had to linger in the hospital for seven more days. She couldn’t just let this frustration go.
Hayden was silent for a moment before saying, “I’ll do whatever you ask me to do.”
Nicole didn’t look at him. “You just need to stay put and not intervene. I have my own ways of dealing with
Caleb.”
Hayden was about to say something, but held back in the end. He wiped the cold sweat off her forehead.” Okay. I’ll listen to you and stay put this time.”
A nurse hurried inside the ward just then.
