Chapter 56

Nicole shook her head after a brief pause. Not anymore.”

Eugene sighed softly in relief. Restrained rage filled his eyes as he said, Shawn would be devastated if he saw you like this. Why didn’t you tell me that something like this happened?”

Nicole subconsciously tightened her grip around her covers, feeling even more anxious now. Had Eugene found out about her brain tumor? She hadn’t even figured out how to tell Shawn about it.

Based on how diligent Eugene was when it came to reporting to Shawn, Shawn might’ve already found

out about her condition.

Nicole’s expression grew gloomier. Eugene, did you tell Shawn about my condition yet? Does he know I

have brain t-”

Someone cleared their throat at this moment, effectively interrupting Nicole. Ms. Jensen, someone called suddenly from just beyond the doorway.

Nicole turned to look at the door, too weak and dizzy to get out of the hospital bed.

Jeremiah entered her ward with her diagnosis report in hand. He shot her a knowing look and said,

You’ve been in a very weak state lately. Now that you’ve hurt your head after passing out from shock, it’s

best that you stay in the hospital and continue resting.”

Only then did Nicole understand that Jeremiah had helped keep her brain tumor condition under wraps from Eugene.

It was a good thing nothing had been revealed to Eugene.

Nicole’s heart lurched as she then realized the severity of her condition. She swallowed nervously and

asked, Then, can I still leave the country by ferry tomorrow in my current condition, Dr. Petersen?”

Out of the question.Eugene poured her a glass of water. Dr. Petersen said your body is very weak and won’t benefit from long travel. You’ll need to rest for several more days before we can even talk about leaving.”

Nicole immediately turned pale in the face. An immense sense of disappointment filled her chest. I really can’t leave, Dr. Petersen?”

Jeremiah’s eyes glistened as he walked over. I didn’t approve of you leaving so soon at first, either. Now that you’ve gotten yourself injured, it’s all the more reason to stay. You need to rest here for at least a week.”

Indeed. Dr. Petersen said you have a concussion, so you need to rest. You’ll be leaving the country regardless, so let’s not rush into it for now,Eugene concurred.

Nicole’s lips were pressed in a tight line. She said nothing in return.

Another week here? They might as well wring her neck while they were at it.

Nicole could’ve finally escaped this place. Why was she forced to linger now? Why couldn’t she leave this miserable place even when she was near the end of her life?

Nicole felt more and more upset inside. She bit down on her tongue to calm herself, only stopping when she tasted blood. She took a deep breath and said, The only reason I was in that bar tonight was because Caleb, Hayden’s friend, set me up.”

Eugene’s smile fell from his face. He scoffed and said, I know. I already have several men keeping an eye on him. They’re just waiting on your sayso for what to do with him.”

Hatred surfaced in Nicole’s eyes.

She had never had any problems with Caleb. Caleb, however, had lied to her when he helped Hayden in the past.

Now, he was antagonizing her in all sorts of ways, even worsening her condition and making her unable to

leave the country.

To Nicole, time was of the essence. She didn’t have much of it left, yet here Caleb was, making her waste

another week of her life.

Nicole wasn’t going to hold back anymore.

She closed her eyes and took out her phone. I’ll send you an address, Eugene. I need your help locating the person who lives there and sending them to the Gibson residence.”

Eugene was confused. Who is this person you’re talking about?”

No questions. Just do as I say.” Nicole’s eyes narrowed coldly.

Even though she was bedridden for now, she still gave off a frightening air. Eugene nodded and said, Alright. I’ll get it done right away.”

After a pause, Eugene added, Someone needs to keep an eye on you. Have Hayden come and stay with you. He’s still your husband, after all. He should be here keeping you safe. God knows where he’s been

ever since you passed out!”

Nicole remained impassive.

Hayden? He was somewhere else in the hospital, staying by his actual wife’s side,

What was Nicole, then? Nothing more than decor, of course.

When Eugene left the room, Nicole stopped Jeremiah, who was about to make a phone call. Don’t notify Hayden of this, she said. Update me about my condition, please.”
