Jeremiah pulled out his phone to call the drug manufacturer. However, his smile disappeared seconds.
later.
Sensing something amiss, Nicole asked curiously, “What’s wrong?”
Jeremiah was clearly disappointed. After hanging up, he seemed to hesitate about how to tell Nicole what had happened.
After a long moment, he lowered his head in exasperation.
“I’m sorry. I won’t be able to get access to the drug anymore. They told me that the research lab has promised their funders to stop distributing medicines to me.“.
Jeremiah hadn’t said anything about the reason behind what had happened at all. But Nicole had already understood everything.
Hayden had failed in kicking Jeremiah out of the hospital. Thus, after finding out that Jeremiah was in need of this drug, Hayden had cut off his source.
Nicole found it difficult to breathe as she tightened her grip on her sleeve.
What did Hayden think he was doing?
Was he trying to set Jeremiah up, all because he was jealous that Nicole and Jeremiah were close?
The loss of this drug didn’t affect Jeremiah, but it sure affected Nicole. She’d lose a lot of blood without it, and her condition would undoubtedly worsen.
Hayden was personally pushing Nicole off the edge of the cliff.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know this would happen. I’ve disappointed you…” Jeremiah’s brows knitted together. He looked immensely guilty. “Why don’t you speak to Hayden and see if he can get me access again?”
“That won’t be necessary.” Nicole flashed a small smile. “Once I go overseas, I’ll have my brother purchase the drug from that lab himself. That way, we won’t need Hayden’s help anymore.”
Jeremiah’s frown deepened.
“Besides, this drug only lessens the frequency of nosebleeds. It doesn’t guarantee me a prolonged life, even if I did take it. I’ll be off now.” Nicole rose to her feet with her purse in hand, fingers cold.
Her anemia had led to her having easily cold feet and hands.
“I only came here to see if you’d gotten your job back,” Nicole added.
Jeremiah was hesitant to speak as he gazed upon Nicole’s pale face. He wanted to console her but didn’t
know where to start.
Chapter 48

He didn’t feel pleased at all as he silently sent Nicole to the door.
Nicole left the hospital soon after and walked along the road alone. She was still sore and weak from what Hayden put her through the night before. Thus, she didn’t want to go back to deal with him right now.
Nicole found herself walking over to Maison Serene.
Hayden used to buy a raspberry mousse cake for Nicole every Wednesday from this store. Knowing this, Nicole never bought it for herself for the past seven years, knowing Hayden would.
She quietly took out her purse and went to queue up at the counter.
She waited for more than two hours for her turn. By then, there were only three mousse cakes left.
She bought one and went to sit beneath a tree outside before digging in.
For some reason, the raspberry mousse cake that used to taste so delicious to Nicole now tasted bland.
She suddenly came to a realization.
What Nicole had once enjoyed about the cake wasn’t the taste, but the knowledge that Hayden had
intentionally gotten it for her every single time. Now that Nicole knew that Hayden hadn’t meant any of it, it had naturally lost the flavor she loved.
Nicole wrapped the rest of the mousse cake up before giving the untouched portion to a cleaner nearby.
The cleaner looked at her in shock. “You queued up for a long time to get this. Why didn’t you finish it? Doesn’t it taste good?”
Nicole smiled at him. “Yes, but for some reason it doesn’t taste the same as it did before. You can have it.
She then left.
To her surprise, Hayden wasn’t home when she returned.
Instead, she found Gloria sitting in the living room, leisurely having a cup of
