It was 3:00 am now, but the lights in the Spencer residence were still turned on.
Hayden stood by the bed while his family doctor checked on Nicole. Guilt was written all over Hayden’s
face as he watched on.
He wanted so badly to punish himself for what he’d done.
Nicole had already been in such a frail condition and couldn’t resist his advances at all. Yet, Hayden had
forced himself on her so aggressively.
What if something worse had happened to Nicole?
Hayden didn’t dare imagine it.
“Mr. Spencer,” the doctor started after clearing his throat and tucking his stethoscope away.
“How is Nicky? Is she okay?” Hayden asked worriedly.
“Well, the intensity of what happened led to her nosebleed and passing out. That said, it cannot happen a
second time as Mrs. Spencer’s is in too fragile a state to handle it.”
The doctor felt so awkward saying all this to Hayden. The former hadn’t expected to encounter such a
situation at all.
Hayden closed his eyes. “I understand. I’m just glad Nicky’s okay.”
“I’ll write her a prescription.” The doctor packed his things away. “By the way, what medicine does Mrs. Spencer usually take? I need to make sure the prescription I write for her doesn’t clash with whatever
she’s already on.”
Hayden recalled that Nicole often consumed the medicine she placed beside the kettle, so he went downstairs to check in the cabinets. But when he sifted through them, the medicine was nowhere to be
found.
He then noticed an empty medication pack in the trash can. He was about to pick it up when he suddenly
heard the doctor’s voice ring out from behind him.
“You’re awake, Mrs. Spencer. How are you feeling?”
Hayden grabbed the empty pack and ran upstairs.
The moment he entered the room and met Nicole’s frail and flat gaze, he felt so guilty that he quickly looked away.
“I’m so sorry, Nicky. I-”
Nicole saw the empty medication pack in his hands and felt her heart lurch. “What are you doing with my medicine?”

Had Hayden found out about her secret?
“I was the one who requested to see it, Mrs. Spencer. In order to write you a prescription, I need to see what meds you’re currently on so as to not prescribe any clashing drugs,” the doctor explained, taking the pack from Hayden.
Nicole forced herself to stand up and snatch the medicine pack from his hand right away.
“It’s nothing special, just an iron supplement. Hurry up and write your prescription,” she said.
Both the doctor and Hayden were surprised by her action. It looked like she was afraid of something
being exposed.
“Well, alright. I’ll prepare it right away.” The doctor then left the room.
Hayden went to her bedside, brow furrowing. “Why didn’t you let the doctor look, Nicky? Are you really just
taking iron supplements? You’re not hiding anything from me, are you?”
Nicole tightened her grip around the pack and shot Hayden a cold look. “What are you going to suspect
me of now?”
Hayden’s breath caught in his throat. Guilt welled up inside him as he saw how pale and lifeless she
looked.
He looked down and said apologetically, “I’m really sorry, Nicky. I was awful toward you because my anger got the better of me. I swear that it’ll never happen again.”
“I don’t believe you,” Nicole said coldly. “Get out.”
“What… What would you have me do so that you’d trust me?” Hayden reached out, trying to hold Nicole’s
hand.
Nicole quickly dodged his grasp.
Hayden then noticed the redness and swelling on her wrist, eyes dilating in shock. “Does your wrist still hurt? I’m so sorry. I didn’t know I’d used that much force.”
This man, who was always so formidable in public, was now behaving like a sad little puppy in front of
Nicole.
“Caleb was the one who did this to me,” Nicole said flatly.
Hayden’s gaze darkened immediately.
Nicole knew that Hayden hated it when others touched or harmed those he cared about. Though he didn’t love Nicole, he still couldn’t simply let anyone hurt his lawfully wedded wife.
Hayden no longer cared that Caleb had been beaten up.
“Caleb will answer for this,” he said darkly.

Nicole turned away from him and lay in bed with her eyes shut. “I don’t want to see you right now. Whether or not you deal with Caleb, it doesn’t change the fact that what’s happened has already happened.”
Hayden tried leaning closer to her, but she quickly opened her eyes and snapped, “Get out!”
Hayden was stunned. He felt immense hurt as he gazed at Nicole in disbelief.
Nicole hadn’t once spoken to him in this manner throughout their entire marriage. Yet, she now wanted
him to leave.
