Chapter 34
There were two more unread messages from Jeremiah, asking her to come to the hospital tomorrow for a checkup to see if her body had changed after taking the new medication.
Nicole looked up at the calendar on the wall. After tonight passed, only four days would remain.
Slapping Matthew that day had felt really satisfying. Within these four days, Matthew probably wouldn’t bother her anymore. Nicole slowly closed her eyes and unknowingly drifted off to sleep.
The next day, Hayden hadn’t returned home all night. After those two phone calls, he hadn’t contacted Nicole again either.
Nicole went to the hospital. After Jeremiah finished her examination, he frowned as he looked at the test results.
Nicole paused and looked at him. “What’s wrong? Isn’t the medication working well?”
Jeremiah nodded. “Your condition hasn’t improved significantly. Have you been in a bad mood lately? If the intracranial pressure can’t be reduced, you won’t be able to travel abroad.”
Nicole instinctively clenched her palms, feeling somewhat anxious. “I haven’t had any emotional ups and downs. Why haven’t my symptoms improved?”
Whether it was Gloria provoking her or the actions of Hayden and his son, she had directly ignored all of it. Even so, there was still no effect?
Jeremiah looked serious. “Stress is also a key factor. If you’re in a hurry to leave, you need to control yourself and stop thinking about things that weigh heavily on you.”
Nicole pressed her lips together and nodded slowly. Jeremiah frowned deeply, staring at her as he said gravely, “You have such a serious illness, and you still haven’t told them?”
Nicole shook her head. “There’s no need to tell them.”
Such things could only be shared with people who truly cared about her. If Shawn knew her life was in danger, he would spend every penny to find a way to help her.
But Hayden wouldn’t. Matthew wouldn’t either. Right now, this father and son only wished she would make room for Gloria faster.
Jeremiah uncapped his pen and clicked it back on again. He sighed, got up, and went to the cabinet, taking something out and bringing it to Nicole. It was a decorative tree with many small, colorful stress balls hanging from it.
Nicole was startled. “This is…”
“These are all stress balls. Whenever I feel anxious, I take them out and squeeze them. They’re quite

effective for relieving emotions. I’m giving this to you.”

Jeremiah pushed the item toward her. Nicole held the decorative tree and smiled at Jeremiah. “Thank you, Dr. Petersen. I’ll be going now.”
She turned around but unexpectedly met a pair of deep, cold eyes. Nicole stopped in her tracks. Through the glass door, she saw Hayden standing outside, though she didn’t know how long he had been there.
Nicole’s heart tightened just as Hayden pushed the door open and entered. His face showed traces of
faint anger.
She’d never seen this expression on his face before; his gaze was ice–cold. Hayden first glanced at the
decorative tree in her arms, then looked at Jeremiah behind her.
Nicole took a breath first. “What are you doing here?”
“You don’t answer my calls or reply to my texts, and then first thing the next morning you run off to see this man?” There was a dangerous edge to Hayden’s voice.
