Chapter 28
Hayden immediately looked toward Nicole, afraid she might be upset. Nicole showed no expression and
turned to sit down.
“You can go eat with them.”
Matthew couldn’t hold back anymore and walked up to her, saying angrily, “Don’t you have anything to say? We’re eating together without you!
“And Ms. Ashford attended the family day event at school instead of you. Everyone says Ms. Ashford is
wonderful, better than you!”
“Matt, don’t talk like that.” Gloria came over and pulled Matthew back.
Just then, a server called out a warning to be careful while carrying over steaming hot dishes. Gloria’s eyes flickered, and she happened to turn around at just the wrong moment.
“Look out!” the server shouted, but it was too late.
The tray in his hands collided with Gloria’s shoulder. The entire plate of food splashed toward Nicole. She dodged quickly, but a few drops of hot soup still splattered on her arm, instantly burning her skin red.
Hayden’s brow furrowed tightly as he stepped forward quickly, gripping Nicole’s wrist. “Are you burned?
Let me see.”
Gloria reacted even more dramatically than he did, her eyes reddening as she stepped forward and bowed apologetically. “I’m so sorry! It’s all my fault. Are you okay?”
Nicole saw through her pretense and said lightly, “Ms. Ashford, are you deaf? The server warned you to be careful, yet you deliberately turned toward him.”
Only then did Hayden realize that if Gloria hadn’t suddenly turned around, she wouldn’t have collided with the server’s dish. Her turning motion had seemed somewhat stiff and abrupt too.
A trace of suspicion flashed in Hayden’s eyes. “Gloria, just now you…”
“Ack!” Gloria suddenly cried out softly, clutching her chest and staggering backward.
Hayden instinctively caught her. “What’s wrong?”
Matthew quickly grabbed her sleeve. “Ms. Ashford!”
“It’s nothing, really. I was just startled, and now my heart is acting up.”
Gloria’s breathing was slightly labored as she smiled bitterly. “Nicole’s right. It’s because my hearing is poor that she got burned. I deserve this chest pain now.”
Matthew grew anxious. “You don’t deserve it at alll Mom, Ms. Ashford didn’t do it on purpose. Why did
you ask her if she’s deaf?”

Hayden stepped sideways to shield Nicole. “That’s enough. Don’t blame your mother. I’ll take Ms. Ashford to the hospital first.”
He turned to look at Nicole. “The server went to get some medicine. Apply it and then go home.”
Nicole wasn’t bothered by the father and son’s anxious concern for Gloria. She moved to a different table
and had the other servers bring over the remaining dishes.
“No rush. The food here tastes great. I’ll finish eating before I leave.”
After Nicole spoke, Gloria was completely stunned. She still had an appetite to eat after being neglected
by her husband and child?
Seeing that Nicole still had an appetite, Hayden felt reassured and left.
In the car, Gloria held Matthew and sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m so useless. I got sick over such a small thing
and ruined your chance to have a nice meal with Nicole.”
“It’s fine. We can eat together another time.” Hayden was driving in front and paused. “But next time you
pick up Matthew, give Nicole a call to let her know.”
Gloria was startled.
Matthew immediately pouted. “Why do we need to tell her? She doesn’t care where I go anyway. And Ms.
Ashford isn’t a bad person. Do we really need to report to her?”
Gloria bit her lip pitifully and pinched his soft cheek, but Hayden frowned. “Your mom and I are your legal
guardians. It’s not appropriate for Ms. Ashford to take you away without saying anything. Listen to me.”
“Okay, I’ll be more careful.” Gloria quickly covered Matthew’s mouth, afraid he would say something else to upset Hayden.
Hayden could see she looked a bit dejected and said politely, “Don’t take it personally. I just think the kid
is troublesome and bothers you too much, which affects your health too.”
Gloria clutched her chest. “Having him keep me company actually cheers me up. By the way…”
Her eyes brightened slightly as she hugged Matthew and smiled. “I heard from Caleb that you’re attending
a class reunion. Why don’t you take me along? I could use some fresh air too.”
Hayden didn’t agree. The class reunion gathered people from their university class who had made it big. They were all elite professionals who either started their own companies or held executive positions at
well–known firms.
While called a class reunion, it was essentially a high–end business gathering that frowned upon bringing outsiders. People generally only brought family members or spouses.
He was about to refuse when Gloria saw it coming and spoke first. “I’ve been recuperating since returning to the country and haven’t had time to go out and have fun. Just let me get out and experience something new, okay?

“Besides, I’m still your company secretary, so it would be appropriate for me to attend business functions
with you, right?”
Hayden found it hard to refuse now. “I’ll bring Nicole along too. Just give my name and go in by yourself.”
“Oh… of course she’ll go with you. She is your wife, after all.” Gloria smiled, looking somewhat disappointed.
Nicole had taken all the years that should have been hers with Hayden!
At the class reunion, her good ally Caleb would be there too. This time, she wanted to see if Nicole could continue staying calm and playing dumb!
