“That’s good! I’ll make some food and bring it over for you both.”

Damian did not agree.

Claudine still had unresolved issues with him, and if Audrey came now, it would only deepen the misunderstandings between them.

“The housekeeper will bring food over. You don’t need to come.”

Audrey on the other end of the phone had not expected Damian to refuse her so directly.

She felt a bit embarrassed, then said, “Alright, then take care of yourself.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, Damian stood in the corridor.

He lit a cigarette and smoked it slowly.

A cold wind blew in through the window, chilling him to the bone.

He thought of the look Claudine had given him in the hospital room just now.

He suddenly couldn’t remember what Claudine’s gaze had been like when she first married him.

He only remembered Desmond joking that in all his years, he had never seen a woman in their circle look at a man

with such infatuation.

He said that she might as well have written on her face: “Claudine is crazy about Damian!”

That was why he had always believed that everything Claudine did before was out of jealousy.

Claudine loved him deeply!

He had known this almost from the very beginning!

Because of this, he always felt that no matter how cold he was, Claudine’s passion for him would never fade.

But thinking about it now, how long had it been since Claudine looked at him that way…

Now, when she looked at him, all that was left in her eyes was disgust and hatred…

Damian felt as if a huge stone was pressing on his heart, making it hard for him to breathe.

He had never imagined that he could hurt a woman so deeply.

The moment Adriana learned that Audrey was her daughter, she made up her mind to make it up to her.

Since her daughter wanted to apply for her doctoral program, she was determined to give her a chance.

This was also a way for mother and daughter to be together without having to acknowledge each other.

As for Claudine…

She had originally planned to discuss with the university leaders about expanding the admissions quota so she could take them both, but unexpectedly, Claudine didn’t show up on the day of the interview,

It was only later, through the news, that she learned what had happened that day.

Fate truly plays tricks on people!

Now, with a man standing between Claudine and her daughter, how could she possibly take them both?

If that happened, how could they possibly focus on their research!

After Claudine was transferred to the general ward, all the monitoring equipment was removed from her, and her con- dition stabilized significantly.

Damian stayed by her bedside almost day and night, while Lindsay would come every morning, bringing over the work that needed to be handled.

The lounge outside the ward had practically become Damian’s office.

Claudine could hear their voices outside and knew that because she had made such a scene, she had caused Damian quite a bit of trouble.

From what Lindsay said, the Barrette Group’s board hoped she would come forward to prove that everything was just a misunderstanding.

The door to the ward opened, and Damian’s familiar scent of cedar stood out sharply in the disinfectant-filled room.

Claudine knew it was him, but she didn’t want to see him.

She closed her eyes.

Of course, Damian could tell that she was deliberately ignoring him.

He placed the meal sent from home on the dining table and glanced again at the woman lying in the hospital bed.

“Angie said these are all your favorites. Let me feed you a little.”

As he spoke, he stepped forward to help Claudine.

Before he could get close, Claudine pressed the nurse call button.

In a top-tier VIP ward, the nurse arrived very quickly.

“Mrs. Barrette, is there anything you need?”

Damian was standing right there, but Claudine didn’t even spare him a glance.

“Could you please find me a caregiver?”

Claudine said.

The nurse looked a bit troubled.

She glanced at Damian beside her.

“Mr. Barrette, what do you think…?”

Looking at the person in the hospital bed, Damian finally realized that when this woman was stubborn, not even ten oxen could pull her back.

“Just do as she says.”

With that, Damian left the ward.

The hospital caregiver arrived quickly and was in the ward not long after.

Claudine heard Damian giving the caregiver some instructions outside, though she couldn’t make out what he said. Soon after, the door to the ward opened again.

Damian spoke softly.

“I’ve already contacted Camberwell University about your PhD interview. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it. You just fo- cus on getting better.”

Claudine ignored him.
