Chapter 12
After feeling slightly better, she immediately complained to Damian, “Before today, I never thought looking after kids was difficult. What a day!”
Damian continued to deal with work without even looking up.
“I was looked after by the maids. Of course, you didn’t find it difficult.”
Brandie muttered, “I was busy back then, OK?”
Hearing this, he looked up at her indifferently.
Feeling guilty under his gaze, she immediately changed the subject.
“What’s up with Claudine? The maid told me you had a fallout, and she hasn’t been at home for the past few days. What kind of mother is she, leaving Darla behind just like that?”
Damian never cared for gossiping servants, and he hated it when Brandie interfered in his personal affairs.
“Don’t listen to their nonsense,” he said, his tone icy.
Brandie thought he was covering up for Claudine, not wanting to hear a word against her.
She clicked her tongue. “I know everything, Dami. I called her today. If you know what she said about you, I wonder -will you still defend her? She said she wanted a divorce. From now on, Darla is no longer her responsibility.”
Damian’s heart skipped a beat. “What?”
Brandie shrugged.
“You don’t believe me? Go ask Darla or anyone at home. I’m not trying to lecture you or something, you know. Over the years, you’ve indulged Claudine so much. Now see what she’s become.
“I told you to move back so that I could put her in her place. But you wouldn’t listen. You…”
She was about to nag again. Sensing this, Damian immediately called for Lindsay.
“Schedule my mom for a SPA.”
Soon, Lindsay led Brandie away.
Finally, the office became quiet again. Pinching the bridge of his nose, Damian continued to work.
Claudine wanted a divorce? Yeah, right.
That was just her anger talking.

She’d never leave him.
After hanging up, Claudine went to the library.
It was hard to find a parking lot there, so she hailed a cab.
Her research topic was “Verification of the Role of AI Image Restoration in Traditional Copying Techniques“. It was an innovative approach in restoration studies, which was also related to Adriana’s latest research.
Though she had been paying attention to the field, her prolonged absence from professional practice left gaps. There was much to learn before she could match Adriana’s pace.
The day had turned completely dark as she stepped out of the library.
With a stack of books in her arms, she tightened her black coat around herself and stood by the roadside, trying to hail a cab.
It was rush hour, and the ride app showed hundreds of people waiting before her.
Glancing up, she realized it was soon about to rain. If she waited any longer, the books would be soaked.
Fortunately, there was a mall not far away.
It was a weekday, so the mall was less crowded than on weekends. She browsed around and saw that the restaurant trending online was relatively deserted.
It occurred to her that she’d promised Darlene they’d come here together.
What was Darlene doing now?
Was Darlene used to the food cooked by the servants? Would she be afraid of sleeping alone? Damian was always so busy. He probably didn’t have time to read her bedtime stories….
She instinctively took out her phone and opened the album, where Damian and Darlene were in every frame.
For the past five years, she had genuinely treated Darlene as her own daughter. But apparently, the feeling wasn’t mu- tual. Darlene didn’t even show her the most basic respect.
Forget it. She was about to divorce Damian anyway. From now on, her path would never cross with theirs.
She stepped into the restaurant, ordered a few internet–famous dishes, and enjoyed dinner alone.
To her surprise, she saw Damian and Darlene.
A woman Claudine had never seen before walked in alongside Damian and Darlene.
