chapter102
When her proposal draft received Mitchell’s approval, the sense of achievement from scaling academic heights was incomparable to anything else.
Mitchell even called her personally, saying he couldn’t understand how someone with such strong professional ability had never made a name for herself in the field.
Claudine felt ashamed and only said it was due to some personal reasons.
She didn’t want to admit that she had wasted five years of her life on a man, only to end up battered and bruised.
Mitchell did not press further.
He only said that when he returned to the country, he wanted to meet Claudine in person.
“Thank you, Prof. Hutchinson. Thank you for giving me this opportunity!”
Mitchell said over the phone.
“Opportunities are earned by yourself. You should thank yourself for having the talent and being willing to work
hard.
“I have high hopes for you. Don’t let me down.”
After hanging up, Claudine looked at the thick stack of materials on her desk and let out a long breath.
Now she understood that focusing on men would only make her cheap, but working hard to improve herself meant every step she took counted!
When Damian received Claudine’s divorce agreement again, this time, he did not ignore it.
He dialed a number in Reedport.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, he got straight to the point. The person on the other end quickly assured him that everything would be handled to his satisfaction.
After hanging up, Damian stood in front of the office’s floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the bustling traffic
below.
He would never be troubled by a woman, whether it was the Claudine of the past or the Claudine of today!
It had been almost half a month since the day of the doctoral interview.
She had not dared to contact Adriana all this time. On one hand, she didn’t want to worry her; on the other, she didn’t know how to face Adriana.

Back then, she had confidently promised Adriana that she would definitely get into the doctoral program.
But in the end, she actually missed the interview because of a man.
What was even more ridiculous was that the whole affair became widely known.
She felt that she had truly let Adriana down.
She even thought that Adriana hadn’t contacted her for so many days because she must be angry with her.
It wasn’t until she received Mitchell’s verbal promise to accept her as his student that Claudine finally felt she could face Adriana.
At the very least, she could let Adriana know that she never treated academic research as a joke, and that she had her
own reasons.
Claudine drove to the faculty housing at Camberwell University.
She got out of the car and took a pile of things from the trunk.
They were all fruits and snacks that Adriana loved, and of course, her homemade tomato beef brisket.
Carrying several bags, she walked toward the courtyard, and from a distance, she heard the sound of a child.
She assumed it was the grandchild of some professor and didn’t pay much attention.
But unexpectedly, when she followed the sound, she actually saw Darlene.
At that moment, Darlene was playing on the swing.
Adriana stood nearby, smiling lovingly, her movements gentle, afraid that pushing too hard would scare Darlene.
The swing was under the big banyan tree. It had never been there before, so it must have been newly made.
Darlene giggled, saying, “Grandma, higher, a little higher…”
Claudine stood there, as if her feet had taken root.
It wasn’t hard to guess that Darlene had probably come with Audrey.
Damian had mentioned last time that Audrey was already on the provisional admission list.
It was only natural for her to visit Adriana.
Seeing how close Adriana and Darlene were, it seemed that Audrey must have been bringing Darlene over often these days.
This… was actually quite nice.
Adriana had always been alone. If Darlene could come often to keep her company, having a child around to liven things up would be a good thing for Adriana.

With both Audrey and Darlene here, she thought it best not to stay and make things awkward for everyone.
With that thought, Claudine turned to leave.
At that moment, Darlene spotted Claudine from the swing.
“Claudine! It’s Claudine!”
The little one pointed excitedly in Claudine’s direction and shouted.
At this point, Claudine couldn’t leave even if she wanted to.
She had no choice but to turn back.

By now, Darlene had already jumped off the swing. Dressed in a pink princess dress, she looked like a cheerful but- terfly as she ran toward Claudine.
Children are always quick to forget.
She didn’t remember how she had once hurt Claudine, or perhaps she never thought she had done anything wrong.
