Chapter 24

When I came back the next day, I saw Henry squatting at my door.

The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my hand, his eyes full of shock and confusion. “I waited outside your door all night yesterday. Did you know?”

“I know,” I answered casually.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the small red light blinking above the door, the surveillance camera I had installed after Henry first showed up.

“Then why did you…” He stopped mid-sentence when he saw my indifferent expression anc quickly changed the topic.

“You went to work last night, didn’t you? Are you tired? This is my birthday gift for you. Can I pu it on you?”

He looked at me with hopeful eyes.

Once, he had looked at Anya the same way. Even when I had fallen and scraped myself in fron of him, his eyes had never turned to me. I tightened the hand at my side, then reached out and pushed him away.

“I’m not familiar with you. And besides, I was with Erwan the whole night.”

At that, Henry dropped the gift from his hand. I didn’t bother to check his expression and walked past him, closing the door firmly behind me.

For the next few days, I stayed home, keeping to my room and reviewing data reports.

One day, Erwan suddenly came to see me.

The moment I saw him, I remembered how I had used him to annoy Henry a few days ago. The young man looked down at me with a smirk. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Realizing my manners, I let him in and turned to make tea.

He caught my hand and said, “Sister, don’t bother. I just came to tell you there’s an academi conference in a few days. Do you want to go?”

“Academic conference?” His words made me momentarily forget the awkwardness I had fel

earlier.

I frowned slightly. Normally, Zion would have been the one to inform me about something like

this.

“Don’t worry, Sister,” Erwan said with a small smile. “I’m also involved in this field, so I came to let

you know.”

Erwan’s face was full of sincerity, making me doubt my earlier suspicions.

Two days later, at the academic conference, as soon as I arrived, Erwan pulled me aside.

“There are so many people here today. Don’t wander around.”

His warm breath brushed against my ear, making them blush and soften. I agreed casually, “Yeah, yeah.”

“Then I’ll go to the other side. You get some rest.”

With that, Erwan turned and left.

After he was gone, I looked around and guessed I was in a lounge.

After a while, boredom set in, so I stood up, planning to take a walk.

As soon as I opened the door, someone shoved me hard and I fell to the ground uncontrollably. A sharp pain shot through my palm. I fought the discomfort and stood, facing the men before me. Their faces were fierce and twisted.

Just one look told me they were dangerous, like hardened criminals.

I forced myself to stay calm and glared at them. “What are you doing?!”

“What else could we be doing here besides you?”

“This girl’s really pretty, way better than that Anya or whatever her name is.”

“Enough talking. I’m going first this time! She looks so young.”
