Chapter 23
Hearing Erwan’s teasing, a faint smile appeared on my usually calm face.
Henry looked at me, almost breaking down. “You let him into your room? What’s your relationship with him? I haven’t divorced you yet, you….”
“Henry, Sophie already voided our contract. I have nothing to do with you anymore.”
I pried his hands away and spoke calmly, “From the start, I had a bigger world, but you and your sister trapped me for eight years. At first, she said that if I gave birth to a son for the Taylor Family, she would let me go. But after I had Andrew, she kept me, saying he was too young and needed his mother.”
“I stayed with Andrew as he grew. For five years, you barely gave him any fatherly love. I saw it all and so did he.”
“Now that Andrew is gone, I have no ties left to you or the Taylor Family. If you keep pestering me, I won’t hesitate to fight you over property for
your affairs.”
After saying this in one breath, I shut Henry out.
At the same time, I sent a message to Sophie.
[Henry is with me. Please take him away immediately.]
[I’ve repaid your life-saving favor. We owe each other nothing. If Henry keeps bothering me, I won’t be polite.]
Less than three seconds later, Sophie replied. [The Taylor Family has wronged you in this matter, Kate. I’ll have Henry taken away.]
I didn’t respond. Instead, I looked up at Erwan, who was carrying a bowl of steaming noodles.
‘I didn’t know you could cook.”
Erwan lifted his chin proudly. “Of course. I know a lot.”
‘If you take the time to get to know me, you might find some surprises.”
My heart skipped a beat when his face suddenly came closer. I took the bowl and started eating.
Erwan leaned on the wooden table, chin in his hands, grinning at me. After a while, my face felt hot. I gave him a shy look. “Why are you staring? Is something on my face?”
I instinctively raised my hand to touch it, but he caught my hand. Meeting my startled gaze, Erwan smiled. “Nothing’s there. I think you look cute when you eat.”
“You wouldn’t be so stingy as to not let me watch, right?”
I froze, not expecting that answer.
Then I realized what he meant and my cheeks burned.
Flustered, I lowered my head and continued eating my noodles.
Erwan suddenly asked, “Want to have dinner with me tonight?” “Sure,” I replied casually.
After all, I still owed him a meal. But I had been wrong from the start.
Even though we had been out until almost midnight, he still made no move to go home. When I
asked for the sixth time, Erwan finally looked at me. “I’ll take you somewhere. Close your eyes first. When we get there, I’ll take you home.”
I didn’t doubt him and closed my eyes, letting him lead the way.
Soon, I felt the cool night breeze on my face, easing much of my unease.
“I’ll count to three. Open your eyes after that.”
“Three… two… one!”
As his voice fell, I opened my eyes and saw a sky filled with fireworks.
The night wind carried his warmest wishes to my ears.
“Happy birthday, Sister.”
‘You will always be eighteen.”
