Declan’s expression was vicious, his eyes cruel.
He’d never looked at me like this before.
I stared directly at him, my whole body shaking. “Declan…”
I pointed at Jenna: “You’re yelling at me over this bitch?”
All my grievances came flooding out.
Morning sickness had kept me awake all night, and eating had become torture.
In just two months, I’d lost over ten pounds.
And during my most miserable time, my husband was screwing around with our older female neighbor.
Looking at the two of them, I couldn’t help imagining them in bed together.
Mixed with memories of Declan and me making love, I completely broke down sobbing:

I stared up at him in a daze.

“And… Jenna’s a good woman, not what Sophia’s making her out to be… you two should keep getting to know each other…”
His face reddening, he avoided looking at Jenna and pulled me along:
“You guys take your time. I’m taking her home,”

Just as I was about to question him again, Declan cut me off coldly:
“Enough. Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough?”
Before leaving, I watched Marcus get up to drape his jacket over Jenna’s shoulders.
I felt… confused.
Was that really what this was?
All the way home, Declan kept a stony expression and didn’t say a single word to me.
He wouldn’t even look at me.
Seeing him gearing up for the silent treatment, I blocked his path as he grabbed a blanket to sleep in the study:
“What’s your deal?”
That question set him off completely.
He rubbed his temples irritably, turned to face me, and bellowed:
“What’s MY deal?”
“I should be asking YOU that, Sophia! A whole table of friends, and you pull that stunt, making me look like an idiot! Tell me! How am I supposed to face them after this?!”
I jumped: “You didn’t tell me ahead of time you were setting them up…‘
“Besides, Marcus is still single, and Jenna’s a widow-”
“So what if she’s a widow?” Declan snapped:
“You look down on widows?”
“Marcus may be single, but he’s thirty years old. He’s an orphan without even his own place. What young girl would want him?”
“And even if it’s none of your damn business whether they work out or not, what you did tonight was humiliating for ME!”
Declan rattled off this whole speech without stopping.
