Chapter 26 Catherine’s in Trouble
Catherine found that Michelle had already left after she returned from her meeting. She instinctively checked her office and computer to ensure nothing had been tampered with before finally setting her mind at ease.
She was about to drive home to rest after work when Jeremy called. “Why didn’t you tell me that you were discharged?”
“There was something urgent at the company. I left in a hurry and forgot to tell you.” She tossed her bag onto the passenger seat and closed the car door.
Jeremy stood in the empty ward with the food he had prepared. He had specially cooked her favourite dishes only to discover she had already gone home.
He sighed quietly before laughing it off. “Let’s have dinner together then. Consider it a little celebration that you were discharged from the hospital.”
‘Another day. I’m a bit tired today.” Catherine secured her phone on the mount and drove out of the parking garage.
He didn’t press further. “Alright. Just be careful on your way back.”
She stepped on the brake to pull up at a red light, but the car didn’t seem to slow down!
Instead, it sped up and shot straight through the intersection.
The brakes weren’t working!
Her heart lurched as she realized the problem, and her voice trembled slightly. “Jeremy, my brakes seem to be failing.”
She vaguely remembered that her parents had also been involved in an accident where brake failure had caused their car to crash into a bridge. The vehicle caught fire and resulted in one’s death and the other’s injury.
Her mother was still in a coma.
Catherine couldn’t help but panic. Was she going to die the same way?
Jeremy comforted her on the other end of the phone as he quickened his steps. “Don’t panic. Listen to me.”
She clutched the steering wheel and stared straight ahead as she willed herself to calm down.” Tell me what to do.”

“Keep the wheel steady, turn on the hazard lights, and pump the brakes repeatedly. Try to lower the speed.” He set the food aside and rushed out immediately after she shared her
location with him.
He kept guiding her to slow down the car along the way.
She kept stepping on the brakes, but it didn’t work. The car kept barreling forward, holding steady at 40 miles per hour.
Seeing the traffic ahead, she jerked the wheel into a side street.
Unfortunately, the rush–hour crowd was at its peak.
Would she even survive this?
Catherine thought of her baby in her belly and clenched her teeth. She had to find a way to
survive.
Jeremy comforted her for a while. Then, he hung up to call traffic control to prevent a major traffic accident from occurring.
He called Catherine again afterwards.
However, her nerves were stretched taut. She couldn’t spare a moment to answer his call. Instead, she focused intently on controlling the steering wheel.
Harry was walking toward Jeremy when he ran out of the hospital. However, Jeremy had no time to pay him any mind.
Harry stopped in his tracks. He caught the urgency on Jeremy’s face.
Only one person could make him this anxious. It must be Catherine.
Was she in trouble?
Harry’s brows furrowed slightly. He called Adrian to look into Jeremy’s and Catherine’s situation.
He had paid more attention to Catherine than he realized ever since Jeremy had appeared.
“Mr. Zimmerman, Jeremy has ordered traffic control to clear the road for a car… Mrs. Zimmerman’s car brakes have failed!” Adrian’s voice grew increasingly urgent as he spoke.
Harry’s heart sank. “Where is she?”
“North Ring Road, Line Two…”

Harry interrupted before Adrian could finish speaking. “Send me her location.”
He turned around and strode off in Jeremy’s direction.
