Shannon blinked her eyes and cooed sweetly, “Kenneth, I was just worried she’d trick you! If she’d abort your baby without telling you, what else is she capable of? I did this for your own good!” 

Jean’s face was glacial. She snapped at Kenneth, her voice boiling with fury, “Don’t blame Shannon! I demanded to know!” 

She thrust an accusing finger at me. “You’ll divorce this bitch tomorrow! You were out of your mind marrying her, and now look–she’s murdered your child!” 

In a flash, Jean grabbed a chair and hurled it at me. 

Kenneth reacted in a flash, shielding me and catching the stool mid–air. His voice broke as he roared, “This is be- tween me and her–none of your business! You drove my dad to divorce, and now you want to destroy me too? How many lives do you need to ruin to be satisfied?!” 

His furious words echoed through the vast living room. 

Kenneth’s mother turned pale as a sheet. Her sharp finger trembled as she pointed at him, shrieking, “What did you just say?! You’re really saying that–for that cheap little tramp? Good! Just great!” 

Then, without warning, she flung herself forward and slammed her head into the sharp corner of the marble table. 

Bang! Her limp body crumpled to the floor. 

Kenneth’s eyes widened in horror. “Mom!” 

He rushed over, scooped her into his arms, and bolted out the door. 

Meanwhile, Shannon cast me a smug, triumphant smile. She tilted her chin at me like she’d just claimed victory. 

“Leave now if you know what’s good for you. Staying just makes you more pathetic.” 

I’d planned to ignore her–until I remembered her callous destruction of my mother’s pickles. I felt a surge of anger in my heart. 

I stepped closer, meeting her gloating eyes- 

And slapped her hard across the face. 

Before she could react, I slapped her again. That time, she screamed and lunged at me. 

Old grudges and new ones combined into a single surge of fury–I pushed her down and started pummeling her face. 

Her cries of pain rang through the room.

Chapter 7

“Stop, stop! You’ll ruin my face! I’ll apologize, okay? Just stop hitting me!” 

My palms stung from the force when I finally released her. 

Shannon’s face was swollen and red, covered in the marks of my slaps–she looked like a puffed–up pig. 

She glared at me, eyes filled with venom. “You just wait–I’m not done with you!“” 

Then she scrambled to her feet and fled in a panic. 

I calmly washed my hands and started packing my bags. 

Kenneth didn’t come home that night. The next morning, I went straight to the airport. 

The two–year farce was finally over. 

At that same moment, Kenneth was at the hospital, trying desperately to reason with his mother. 

“Mom, why don’t you want me to be happy? I love Regina. Can’t you just let me have this happiness?” 

His mother had eight stitches on her forehead. She hadn’t faked it–she really did ram her head into the table intending to die. She cast him a sideways glance and let out a cold snort. 

“That kind of woman is dangerous. If she could abort one pregnancy, she’d do it again. If you insist on keeping her, I’ll kill myself. Choose–her or your own mother. The decision is yours.” 

With that, she turned away, ending the conversation. 

Kenneth felt like his head was splitting open. Caught between two impossible choices, his entire body ached as if he’d been cleaved in two by an axe–he barely recognized himself anymore. 

As he walked out of the hospital room, Shannon came hurrying down the corridor toward him. 

Her face was bruised and puffy, her eyes swollen like walnuts. 

She threw herself dramatically into Kenneth’s arms. 

“Kenneth! Regina did this to me because she hates that I told your mother the truth! You have to make this right! How can I show my face like this?” 

Shannon wept theatrically while sneaking a peek at him from under her lashes- 

She found Kenneth’s face dark with barely contained fury.
