As we ate, Eric returned, visibly fatigued and rubbing his brows.
“Amanda, I’m sorry. I still haven’t managed to persuade my parents.
“But marrying Karen is just a temporary solution. Once the Daglesh family achieves their goals with the Harlan fami- ly, I’ll end the marriage.”
I realized that I suddenly couldn’t comprehend Eric’s feelings.
Karen was the untouchable beloved in his heart.
Now that Karen had returned and the two families were forming a marriage alliance, shouldn’t Eric feel content?
Could it be that he had genuinely fallen in love with me, the stand–in?
Even Eric was confused about his own feelings.
On that day, after Eric clumsily signed off on my resignation application, he felt an inexplicable annoyance as he saw me celebrating with glee.
Even though I was moving away from his team, my happiness was undeniable.
However, he couldn’t dig into it further–he had committed to picking up Karen from the airport.
When Eric saw Karen again, he noticed she seemed different.
Her voice took on a sugary tone, she clung to his arm, and her flirtatious behavior made goosebumps appear on his
skin.
He recalled how I used to be playful with him too, but never in such an exaggerated or pretentious way.
Gently, he withdrew his hand, maintaining some space between them.
“Eric, why are you being so distant? Is there someone else on your mind?”
Karen asked, her cheeks puffed in annoyance.
The thought of me flickered in Eric’s mind once more, causing his heart to momentarily skip.
He gazed vacantly, wondering if I was merely a stand–in for Karen.
Maybe it was because he had spent so much time with me lately and had grown accustomed to my presence. He fig- ured it would be okay once he broke this habit.
“How could that be? You’ve always been the only one in my heart.”

Eric decided to take Karen’s hand and planned to transfer me from his team once he returned.
However, he didn’t anticipate that I would submit my resignation.
He absentmindedly signed the resignation papers, allowing me to leave.

It wasn’t until I hadn’t shown up at work for several days and he saw the resignation letter on his desk that it hit him.
Eric’s mind went blank, and anger flared up intensely.
He thought I had been so indulged by him that I became reckless.
It was just a transfer–how dare I quit in a huff? Eric vowed to track me down and teach me a lesson.
Initially, Eric dismissed the search, confident that I would return to him because I couldn’t live without him.
However, his attitude changed when he dispatched someone to my residence, only to discover I had vanished along with my belongings.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Eric activated all the Daglesh family’s connections and resources to track me down, eventually locating me at the airport.
On that day, Eric was in a good mood and eager to reconnect with me.
However, another man unexpectedly showed up, and it was clear he shared a close bond with me.
This stirred feelings of jealousy in Eric.
Sadly, he came to the realization that he might have genuinely fallen for someone who was just a stand–in.
“Amanda, keep your distance from Samuel. He’s not someone you should trust. He’s made a lot of enemies, and it’s only a matter of time before problems catch up with him.
“The Daglesh family has been in business for generations and has amassed great wealth. I’m the ideal choice for you.”
“Break things off with Samuel, stop all communication with him, and choose me, alright?”
Eric grasped my hand and kissed the back of it.
“Eric, are you mistaken? I’ve never had feelings for you or Samuel.
“To both of you, I’m a stand–in. But to me, you both mean nothing.”
“Amanda, we’ll have time ahead. I’ll slowly convince you to change your mind.”
Eric gently stroked my hair, his eyes holding a wistful look.
As his gaze fell on my red lips, he moved in closer.
“Get away from me! You disgust me!”
I shoved him back with all my might and slapped his face.

Eric’s striking face bore five distinct finger marks. He held his cheek, a slight smirk appearing on his lips.
“Amanda, remain with me forever. We’ll be entwined until the end.”
“Let me through! I want to see who thinks they can stop me!”
A ruckus erupted at the entrance as Karen barged in, her high heels clacking.
