Chapter 92 

Lucius had wanted to ask this question for a long time. Somehow, he always felt that Valerie’s upbringing was far more complicated than what the investigation records had shown. 

Without turning her head, Valerie said, “Don’t you already know about my upbringing? I grew up in the countryside and earned a living through farm work. Look at my hands–they’re full of calluses from working in the fields.” 

She added, “I had no choice. My family was poor when I was little, and to get three meals a day, I had to take whatever jobs I could. No work meant no food. If I failed to finish the tasks assigned for the day, those heartless bosses would scold me and even punish me physically.” 

Lucius frowned deeply. “With your temperament, what kind of heartless boss would dare punish you?” 

It seemed more likely for her to be the one bullying others. 

Valerie pouted. “I was little back then, so I didn’t know how to fight back. If it happened now? Well, I’d like to see them try.” 

In his mind, Lucius saw a scene. Valerie was in ragged clothes, working just for a bite to eat. She got beaten and abused by some fat, greedy boss. 

For some reason, he suddenly felt a pang of heartache for everything she might have suffered. 

While he was lost in thought, Valerie suddenly quickened her pace. Because of his injured leg, Lucius could only follow after her slowly. 

When he pushed through the jungle and saw what lay ahead, he froze in shock. 

He hadn’t expected that this deserted island was actually an abandoned military base. Besides the long–unused training grounds, quite a bit of military equipment had been left behind. 

Valerie’s target was an abandoned helicopter. Its body was already rusted all over. 

She waved at Lucius with a grin. “Look! There’s a helicopter here.” 

Lucius said, “See if there’s a radio. We should try to contact the police as soon as possible.” 

But Valerie ignored his suggestion, fiddling with the controls, as though she had found a brand new toy. 

While Valerie busied herself inside the cockpit, Lucius took the chance to survey their surroundings. From the looks of it, the place hadn’t been abandoned for very long. Many of the facilities still appeared fairly new. 

He wondered what had happened before the people left. It was strange that some usable

equipment hadn’t been taken with them. 

After circling the base, he found Valerie still in the cockpit. “Have you gotten addicted to playing in there?”

Valerie didn’t answer. Instead, she somehow found a pair of sunglasses and perched them on 

her nose. 

From Lucius‘ angle, she looked like a dashing female pilot. It seemed to stir something in his 

heart. 

Valerie pointed to the co–pilot seat. “Get in. This young lady will fly you home to your mommy.” 

Not wanting to dampen her enthusiasm for playing pilot, Lucius reluctantly sat in the co- pilot’s seat. 

The moment he settled him, Valerie tossed him a headset. “The noise will be unbearable when we start up. Put it on.” 

Lucius was speechless, but he helplessly put on the headset. Just as he was about to lecture Valerie for being too playful, the rotor blades roared to life, sending the grass below rolling in 

waves. 

Valerie reminded him, “Buckle up. The helicopter’s about to take off.” £1 

The words had barely left her lips when the helicopter shot up into the sky. 

Watching the deserted island grow smaller and smaller beneath them, Lucius couldn’t 

suppress his shock. “Valerie, you actually know how to fly a helicopter?” 

Valerie handled the controls with practiced ease. “Back then, I worked as a janitor at an airport to earn my meals.” 

It was that same line again. Lucius seriously suspected she was mocking his intelligence. 

Of course, Valerie wasn’t about to tell him the truth. The reason the old helicopter could take to the air was that she had repaired it. 

When she first got in, she had checked and found that it wasn’t completely broken. After some repairs, it could just barely fly.
