Chapter 73 

Keane, on the other hand, had a much more complex expression on his face. After all, Lucius and Valerie had already lawfully registered their marriage, yet they were now pretending to be strangers in public. Plus, why did there seem to be a hint of delight in such a weird scenario? 

At the same time, an evil thought suddenly surfaced in Sonia’s mind. “Isn’t Mr. Holt your boyfriend, Val? When did you switch to dating Mr. Foster?” 

Sonia was using this wayward way of implying to Darrell that Valerie was a noncommittal flirt who dated anyone and everyone. 

What Sonia didn’t know was that this seemingly smart tactic of hers only made Lucius more disgusted with her. 

“Ms. Woodward, I’m sure you know what it means to not judge a book by its cover,” Lucius said. He wasn’t going to allow Sonia to insult Valerie in this manner, even though his marriage to Valerie hadn’t been publicly revealed yet. 

Sonia was a little surprised to see Lucius chastise her because of Valerie. “I–I was just pointing things out as they are.” 

Darrell was clearly not going to play into Sonia’s hands. He pretended to be confused while asking Valerie, “Why did Ms. Woodward address you as Val just now?” 

Valerie lazily fanned herself. “When my father cheated on my mother, he ended up getting his mistress pregnant with twins. That’s how they took advantage of the situation to become the family’s legitimate children.” 

Valerie then pointed at Sonia with her chin. “So technically, Ms. Woodward here is my half- sister on my father’s side, hence the nickname she calls me.” 

Hearing that, Sonia was pissed. “You’d better watch your words, Valerie.” 

When had anyone ever implied she was a bastard child in her 20 years of being an elite socialite in Windmere? 

Valeria grinned and retorted, “Was I lying? The difference between children born in and out of wedlock is that the former is legitimate, while the latter isn’t. Children born out of wedlock can be called illegitimate children, though vulgar people call them bastards.” 

She happily fanned herself and added, “It looks like I’m a very vulgar person.” 

Even though Keane knew he shouldn’t be laughing in such a circumstance, he still couldn’t help but chuckle out loud. 

As always, Valerie managed to surprise him. She never stopped refreshing Keane’s

Keane’s laughter made Sonia grow more upset. She looked at Lucius, as if asking him if he was really going to sit by and let his bodyguard disrespect her in public. 

One of Lucius‘ core principles in life was that women didn’t need to cheer their men on when the latter went through their battles, and vice versa. 

But Lucius made an exception for Valerie tonight. “Though Ms. Collins‘ choice of words may be a little crass, she was still speaking the truth.” 

Valerie was surprised by how much Lucius was siding with her. If Sonia was going to overestimate herself and attempt to pick a fight with Valerie, then Sonia deserved the consequences she got from it. 

Darrell added fuel to the fire. “I didn’t know Ms. Woodward and Ms. Collins were related in such a way. But you must’ve taken on your mother’s looks, Ms. Collins. After all, you and Ms. Woodward look so different from each other.” 

Valerie giggled, covering her face with her hand fan. “Please be mindful of your words, Mr. Foster. You can kick a lackey as hard as you want and disregard its dignity, but you still have to make sure its owner isn’t disrespected.” 

Even without additional clues, everyone present was smart enough to know who the “lackey” and “owner” Valerie implied here were. 

Lucius gazed firmly at Valerie, while she returned it without fear. 

As for Sonia, she wasn’t going to tolerate being called a lackey. 

“You’re so capable of using your looks and body to flit between men, Val. First it was Mr. Holt, and now it’s Mr. Foster. They may not know how colorful your past is, but I’ve looked into it in depth. Not only did you often get into fights in school, but you were even arrested recently for disruptive behavior.” 

She then turned to Darrell and said, “Val is highly skilled at toying with men. Please don’t fall for this innocent and kind mask that she puts on, Mr. Foster.”
