Chapter 20
“Aren’t you worried that people will find out about our relationship?” Valerie asked
uncertainly.
Lucius responded firmly, “This person can be trusted.”
“If you’re fine with it, so am I.” She was just as eager to uncover the mystery.
Like before, Lucius had appeared on Valerie’s bed in a set of silk pajamas. To leave the house, he had to call Keane for help.
An hour later, Keane showed up at Valerie’s door with a bag in hand. When he found Lucius eating instant noodles at the dining table, he wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him.
Valerie invited Keane in. “Make yourself at home. We’ll head out once we finish eating.”
Keane had seen plenty in his life, yet he couldn’t picture Lucius in this easygoing scene.
While Keane wrestled with his thoughts, Lucius finished his instant noodles and gave him a quick rundown of what had happened. After hearing the whole story, Keane was dumbfounded. “Mr. White, are you and Ms. Collins caught up in some kind of… supernatural phenomenon?”
Lucius’ face fell. “We need to see Gustavo.”
Gustavo Edandor was well respected in the mystic arts world and had once been Melvin’s personal astrologer. Lucius had dealt with him before and knew that he kept his word and could be trusted. Lucius quickly set up a time and place to meet Gustavo at a secluded café.
Before they left, Keane called the owner to reserve the place and keep everyone else out.
Parked at the entrance of the complex was still Lucius’ flashy SUV. Watching Lucius and Valerie step out together, Keane suddenly thought that they looked like they belonged together.
Valerie’s expression gradually darkened when she spotted that SUV. “Let’s go separately.”
“You’re not coming with us?” Lucius frowned.
Valerie pulled out her key and stuck it in a slightly used SUV by the curb. With a soft beep, the car unlocked. She slipped behind the wheel and waved at the dumbstruck Lucius and Keane. See you later!”
After watching her speed off, Keane finally found his voice. “Ms. Collins can actually drive.”
Lucius shot him a cold look. “The dossier on Valerie you put on my desk was your sloppiest work yet.”
Keane was rendered speechless.
When the SUV pulled up to the meeting place, Valerie was already there.
The three of them walked into the café. The owner, who had received the call about reserving the place, greeted them respectfully. “Gustavo has been waiting for you for quite some time, Mr. White.”
Lucius shot Valerie a look. “Let’s go.”
Valerie hadn’t expected Gustavo to be over 100 years old. Dressed in a suit, with silver hair and a surprisingly youthful face, he carried an air of otherworldly grace.
“Luc, you’re here!” Gustavo set down his coffee mug. His gaze, however, landed on Valerie’s face.
After studying her for a while, he said with a faint smile, “This young friend must be the one you told me about.”
He had called her a young friend instead of a young lady. He could tell Valerie was part of the
mystic art world.
er taking their seats, Lucius introduced her. “This is Valerie.”
wo’s smile widened. “I already know why you’re here.”
He looked back and forth between them, his curiosity growing. “In all my years, this is the first time I’ve encountered a bond as extraordinary as yours.”
