Chapter 143Â

Jay’s group had repeatedly harassed the hospital nurses and stirred fury among the hospital’s internal staff. Many medical workers whispered among themselves that scum like Jay was better off dead.Â
Even the doctor found it strange. Why were the other three thoroughly beaten up, while Jay remained physically unharmed?Â
What Skyler didn’t know was that Silas had recognized Jay while confronting the group and giving the three a lesson. In fact, Silas knew exactly who the other three beaten troublemakers were as well.Â
Those who dared to cause trouble in Windmere had some family background to back them up, but none of those three were significant and influential enough to stand against the Whites.Â
Well aware of Jay’s condition and that he didn’t have much time left to live, Silas had intentionally avoided Jay when delivering the beating. Still, he’d made sure Jay witnessed his companions being brutally thrashed.Â
Terrified, Jay wet himself and begged on his knees, for fear that the fists raining on his friends would turn on him. The shock was so overwhelming that he fainted on the spot.Â
No one expected the fainting spell to trigger a relapse, undo all his hard–earned recovery, and send him back to square one.Â
In a panic, a thought crossed Skyler’s mind. “The drug! Why didn’t you use the drug?”Â
Valerie’s drugs had been astonishingly effective in pulling Jay out of the ICU last time. He believed it would work again.Â
The doctor shook his head. “We administered it, but it didn’t work.”Â
Marnie looked confused. “What drug?”Â
“The drug Valerie gave,” Skyler impatiently explained.Â
At that, Marnie was even more puzzled. “What does that ingrate have to do with this?”Â
Ignoring her nonsense, Skyler quickly dialed Valerie’s number, only to realize that he was still blocked.Â
He had no choice but to use Marnie’s phone instead. The first two calls went unanswered before Valerie finally picked up on the third try.Â
“Valerie! Jay is in critical condition!” he yelled.Â
At Azure Bay, fresh from her shower, Valerie lounged like a lazy cat against a large pillow, while Lucius gently dried her damp hair with a towel. The pleasures of intimacy had left them both feeling deeply relaxed.Â

Perfectly content on being pampered by Lucius, Valerie had her phone on speaker on the bedsideÂ
table.Â
Skyler’s voice blasted through. “Wherever you are, come to the hospital right now! Jay’s dying, so come and save him at once!”Â
She took a tip of her bedtime milk before letting out a cold snort. “If he’s dying, call a doctor. Why are you calling me?”Â
“The drug you gave me doesn’t work at all!” Skyler furiously snapped.Â
“Before you question the effectiveness of my drug, you should figure out what caused this relapse. He could have lasted up to six months in optimal condition with the formula and dosage I gave you.Â
“During these six months, he needed a routine, a light diet, and absolutely no external shocks. If those conditions were met, I guarantee he’d be fine. Otherwise, don’t blame me for not being able to help.”Â
Every word Valerie said felt like a stab to Skyler’s heart. She’d warned him about these requirements when she gave him the drug, but he hadn’t taken them seriously.Â
Growing desperate, he insisted, “Since your drug has failed, a kidney transplant is the only option left. I must take your kidney, Valerie.”Â
