Chapter 139Â

Silas and a dozen bodyguards swarmed into the hallway and sealed off every exit.Â
Valerie was hauled into a pair of broad, solid arms before Lucius‘ cold voice sounded from atop her head. “Are you hurt?”Â
She’d been in the restroom for too long, so he came out searching with the bodyguards, only to stumble upon the infuriating scene.Â
Eugene and his group sure had the nerve to dare lay hands on his wife. It seemed they had a death wish.Â
Valerie inwardly complained that Lucius had arrived at the wrong time. Dealing with scum was something interesting she would have loved to handle herself.Â
“I’m fine. They didn’t manage to hurt me.”Â
Eugene’s group had been arrogant just moments before and was completely caught off guard by Lucius‘ sudden appearance. Still clutching the spot where he’d been kicked, Eugene put on a show of false bravado and roared, “How dare you! Do you have any idea who I am?”Â
Silas responded with several hard slaps across his face. “Go on, tell me who you are.”Â
The blows left Eugene bleeding from his nose and mouth, even knocking the cross–shaped earring off his left ear.Â
He snapped angrily, “My uncle is the famous Mr. White of Windmere. Hurt me, and you’ll pay.Â
Valerie looked at Lucius as if to ask, “Is this guy really your nephew?”Â
Lucius was utterly speechless. He had no idea who Eugene was at all.Â
Though Valerie was unharmed, he couldn’t bring himself to swallow his anger and coldly ordered Silas, “Whoever he claims to be, we’ll teach him manners since his parents failed toÂ
do it.”Â
Silas delivered a fierce kick to Eugene’s chest. “Don’t think you can claim to be related to the White family as you wish.”Â
Horrible, agonizing cries rang out behind them as Valerie and Lucius left. She was about to look back at the scene when he pulled her tighter around her waist and firmly guided her out of the building. “Silas will handle it. It’s getting late, so let me take you home.”Â

On the ride back, he sensed her low spirits and offered, “I’ll have Silas assign some bodyguards to stay with you. What happened today won’t happen again.”Â
Assuming he’d misunderstood, Valerie said, “I don’t need bodyguards.”Â
But he firmly insisted, “We can’t take any chances when it comes to your safety.”Â
Her striking beauty made her an easy target for the wrong kind of people. He wouldn’t rest easy unless he had protection watching over her.Â
Valerie was equally firm in her refusal. “I hate feeling like my every move is being monitored. It’s suffocating. You don’t want our relationship to be strained over something so minor, do you?”Â
Lucius hadn’t expected her to be so stubborn about this either. After chiding himself for being too anxious and pushing too hard, he softened his tone to explain, “I just don’t like you being upset again.”Â
“I’m upset because I saw someone I didn’t want to see.”Â
“Those lowlifes?”Â
“Jay was one of the four.”Â
“Sonia’s twin brother and your half–brother?” Lucius asked, raising an eyebrow.Â
“That’s the one.” Valerie didn’t deny it. She somewhat regretted providing Skyler with those drugs and pulling a waste of space like Jay back from the brink of death. Jay belonged in hell, and a social parasite like him only created more tragedy by remaining alive.Â
Even now, she still couldn’t forget the post that had been deleted minutes after it was uploaded. What kind of torment had the victims endured?Â
Lucius leaned closer and murmured in her ear, “For someone like that… Would you prefer him alive or dead?”Â
