Chapter 136Â
“Who set up the array for you?” Lucius asked.Â
“No one else. I did it myself,” Valerie replied.Â
He was obviously surprised. “Are you proficient in mystic arts?”Â
Then, he quickly added, “Don’t tell me you picked it up while working for some tycoon to make a living.”Â
He’d heard the same excuse several times.Â
This time, however, Valerie didn’t hide the truth. “Have you forgotten? My dad is from the mystic arts world.”Â
From the driver’s seat, Silas chimed in, “But isn’t Skyler in the food and beverage industry?”Â
Through the rearview mirror, Lucius shot him a sharp look. Aggrieved and hurt by the glare, Silas mumbled, “I’m sure I’m not wrong, Mr. White. He really is in the food service.”Â
While Valerie smiled and said nothing, Lucius immediately understood. The dad she spoke of wasn’t Skyler but the legendary master Gustavo had spoken of–Valerie’s rumored foster father. He truly wished to meet the man in person if he ever had the chance someday.Â
Dinner was at one of Lucius‘ favorite clubs he frequented, known for a chef whose skills he deeply admired.Â
Valerie wasn’t particularly picky about food. Anything was fine as long as it filled her stomach.Â
This was the first time the married couple dined out together without any specific occasion. While Valerie didn’t feel anything special about it, Lucius treated the meal as their first official date and ordered over a dozen dishes for just the two of them.Â
“Where’s Silas? Tell him to join us,” Valerie said, eying the lavish spread. It seemed wasteful for just the two of them.Â
He gestured toward the side room. “They’re over there and won’t go hungry.”Â
Since it was a “they” and not a “he“, that meant Silas wasn’t dining in the side room alone.Â
Valerie immediately understood that, besides Silas, other bodyguards were always discreetly stationed around Silas. They moved like shadows, rarely seen but ever–present.Â

“Do you always have to travel with a whole team?” she teased.Â
Lucius also seemed equally exasperated. “Those are family rules, so I don’t have a choice.”Â
Even as the head of the Whites, there were some rules not meant to be broken.Â
“Was it tough growing up in a family like that?” Valerie casually asked. She hadn’t pried into Lucius‘ background, but she knew that the Whites had extraordinary influence in WindmereÂ
Born as the youngest of the Whites and the only legitimate heir, Lucius had been raised to be the head of the Whites since the day he was born. Just imagining a controlled environment where every word and action was strictly guided felt stifling to Valerie.Â
Lucius smiled. “The White family has countless rules, but my childhood was relatively free. My dad’s focus was always on my mom, and my mom’s priority was my happiness.”Â
Valerie hadn’t expected him to open up about his family. “Did your parents love each other deeply?”Â
He nodded. “You could say that. At the very least, they raised me in a warm and loving home.”Â
Curious, she pressed further, “I heard you have six older siblings, each from a different mom. Since your dad sounds like quite the romantic, how does your mom not mind?”Â
He leaned forward and lightly tapped the tip of her nose. “From now on, they’re your dad and mom, too.”Â
