Chapter 123

Lucius asked, “Why did you go to bed so early last night?”

Valerie took a sip of the chilled water before she looked at him with a cheeky smile. “I stripped down, cleaned up, and waited for someone all night. Yet, he never came.”

Her teasing tone and bewitching gaze had him momentarily spellbound. “Why don’t we make up for that right now?”

He had been busy until the middle of the night and hadn’t returned home until it was late. To keep her from smelling the blood on him, he had soaked in the bath for an hour.

He hadn’t had the heart to wake her, seeing her sleep so soundly.

Valerie pushed him away. “I went to bed hungry last night, and you won’t even let me eat this morning? That’s just cruel.”

Her mock pout and wounded tone made Lucius laugh. “I’ll eat with you.”

During breakfast, he asked, “Aren’t you curious why I want to buy that old property from the Woodward family?”

Valerie said, “Go on, tell me.’

Lately, Lucius had found himself wanting to share more and more whenever she was around. Gustavo said the old property was built atop a wealth-gathering array. It can boost my family’s fortune.”

Valerie bit into her sandwich. “With how rich your family already is, do you really need any

more luck?”

He poured her a glass of milk. “Even the mightiest family fades one day. I can afford to ignore wealth and power, but I still have to think of my descendants. And this is said to generate fortune for ten generations.”

Valerie nodded. “Fair point. Then, I’ll wish your family good fortune and lots of children and grandchildren.”

Lucius smirked. “When you say that, aren’t you also saying it for yourself?”

Valerie blinked innocently. “What’s that got to do with me?”

He leaned in. “Aren’t my children also your children?”

“Where did you get that idea from?”

Lucius lowered his voice. “Did you forget our mission last night?”

There was a faint smile tugging at his lips. He couldn’t help but imagine the day when Valerie would give him a child who would call him “Dad” in a soft, sweet voice.

Valerie quickly changed the topic. “Guess why Sonia bypassed Naomi and offered to sell the property to you herself.”

Lucius said with certainty, “For profit.”

Valerie corrected, “For mutual profit.”

Lucius raised an eyebrow. “How did you figure that?”

A mischievous glint flickered in her eyes. “What if the condition for buying the house is that you marry her? Would you do it?”

Lucius chuckled. “If I married her, I’d be committing bigamy.”

“And compared to the fate of your descendants, is bigamy really that important?”

Lucius actually paused to think about it.

Valerie scoffed. “See? That’s the true face of men. You’d even toss the law aside the moment profit is concerned.”

She stood to leave the table, but Lucius pulled her into his arms. “Let me make this clear again. Sonia is just an employee of the White family. She’s nothing compared to what we have.”

Lucius wasn’t the kind of man who liked explaining himself.

Yet, since meeting Valerie, he’d broken that rule more times than he could count.

And strangely, each time he did, it felt sweet rather than humiliating.

For a fleeting moment, Valerie thought she saw genuine tenderness in his eyes. Could it be that this man was actually starting to be serious about her?
