A fleeting shadow crossed Thomas’s eyes, a glint of cold light gone as quickly as it appeared.
He, too, would never let this go.
Sharon hadn’t even blamed Julliard, so how could she ever blame Thomas? After all, she
was the one who had granted his leave of absence. 1
Neither Julliard nor Thomas deserved blame. The one who bore it all, the true culprit, was
Jamie.
Wendy broke the silence. “Sharon, it’s already late. You should rest. Tomorrow, Thomas and I will accompany you to pick up the Kalen family’s files.”
Sharon’s expression shifted slightly at that.
“Tomorrow I won’t be able to go. Something’s come up. I’ll tell my dad. You and Thomas
can go without me.”
There was so much she had yet to learn. Not only the intricacies of business, but every detail
of the Kalen Group itself.
Since she had chosen to join the family company, she needed to understand it thoroughly.
The documents waiting for her were not business contracts but family records-things every Kalen heir ought to know, so she wouldn’t one day embarrass herself in public by failing to recall even her own family’s work.
Richard had waved a generous hand, urging her to take them and study.
The confidential files, however… those were still far beyond her reach.
Wendy blinked in surprise. “Sharon, aren’t you starting at Kalen Group by the end of the month? Shouldn’t you be in a hurry to study? What could possibly be more important than
this?”

She wasn’t wrong. When Sharon entered Kalen Group, she would almost certainly face opposition. With no foundation, she was like a sieve full of holes, riddled with weaknesses.
Sharon understood this all too well. She had already bought stacks of business books and even planned to hire a private tutor.
But she replied calmly, “Julliard rarely comes to Marcentine. He’ll only be here for two or three days, and he asked me to show him around.”
Having lived and studied in Marcentine for many years, Sharon knew the place well. It
wasn’t unreasonable that Julliard wanted her as his guide.
Hearing his name, Wendy hesitated. Since Julliard had helped Sharon so much, she couldn’t object.
Still, she pressed, “At least take Thomas with you. We just arrived in Marcentine, and this is their territory. If they’re trying to erase evidence, they may resort to underhanded tricks. With Thomas by your side, I’ll feel more at ease.”
Sharon glanced at Thomas and gave a small nod.
“Thomas, I’ll be troubling you these next few days.”
He smiled faintly. “It’s no trouble. It’s part of my job.”
Something flickered across Wendy’s face then-hesitation, a weight she hadn’t voiced.
Sharon noticed immediately. Wendy’s heart was burdened.
She turned to Thomas. “Thomas, go rest first.”
“All right.”
Once he left, Sharon shut the door. “Wendy, is there something you want to tell me?”
Wendy’s gaze wavered. “Sharon, I… have some personal matters to take care of. I may need to leave for a while.”

Sharon didn’t pry. “All right. If you have business, go ahead and handle it. Don’t worry about me. But promise me this-if you ever need my help, you’ll tell me. Don’t carry the
burden alone.”
Wendy’s eyes grew hot with unshed tears. “I promise.”
“When do you plan on leaving?” Sharon asked.
“In about three days. I want to see this situation with Jamie through first.”
If Sharon’s position became truly dangerous, Wendy would never forgive herself for leaving. She was determined to stay until there was some kind of resolution.
After a thoughtful pause, she ventured, “Sharon, I’ve been thinking… perhaps we should have Thomas move into the manor. If anything happens, he’d be right here to protect you.”
