Chapter 992
A quiet, indescribable warmth stirred in Sharon’s heart.
Cradling the music box with care, she whispered, “Thank you. I’ll treasure it.”
Seeing that she truly liked it, a soft light rose in Julliard’s eyes. But as his thoughts drifted back to recent events, a shadow settled over his heart.
Lex had vanished completely, leaving not the faintest trace.
For weeks, Julliard had been pursuing him. At first, there were scattered reports and fleeting glimpses of Lex’s movements. Yet Lex was cunning; his counter–surveillance skills were razor–sharp. More than once, Julliard had nearly closed in–only to watch him slip away at the last second.
Since that last escape, there had been no word at all. The silence gnawed at him. He feared Lex might already have been rescued.
Sharon’s voice pulled him back.
“Julliard, you’ve done so much for me this time. I owe you far too much. If there’s ever a way I can repay you, just tell me.”
He returned to the present, his handsome face lifting into its usual refined smile.
“Sharon, you’re far too polite.” He hesitated, then asked, “I can only stay in Marcentine for three days. Do you have time in the next couple of days to show me around?”
A flicker of hesitation crossed her eyes. She had already agreed to meet Jamie in three days‘ time. Her plan had always been to bait them into losing control, but that didn’t mean she could go in unprepared. If they truly grew desperate, she would be in danger.
But Julliard had helped her so much, and it was rare for him to be here at all.
Sharon answered quickly, “Of course. No problem.” 1
He noticed the momentary pause in her expression, his lips parting as if to speak. But in the end, the words he meant to say–the gentle, understanding reassurance–never left his mouth.
She was in Marcentine now. Their paths would no longer cross as often as before. Any time spent alone with her was precious beyond measure.
After leaving, Wendy caught the way Thomas’s gaze lingered again and again in Sharon’s direction. She couldn’t help but laugh.
“Thomas, why don’t you wander around for a bit? Once Sharon and Julliard are finished talking, she’ll call us. For now, let’s not interrupt them. Give them a little time together.”
Thomas spoke suddenly. “You trust Julliard that much?”

Wendy blinked, puzzled. “Why wouldn’t I? He’s refined, upright, and he’s helped Sharon a great deal. He seems like a good guy.”
“You think anyone who helps you must be good?” Thomas pressed.
“Of course not,” Wendy countered. “Take Carter, for example. No matter how much he helps, he’ll never wash off the stain of being a scumbag.” 12
A faint, enigmatic smile tugged at Thomas’s lips. “Carter isn’t a good man, that much is true. But tell me, if Julliard could betray his buddies, how good can he really be? Like attracts like. If Nate and Carter are rotten, do you really believe Julliard emerged from the same muck untouched?” 1
Wendy brushed it off with a shake of her head. “Julliard never betrayed Carter. He simply lent Sharon a hand when he could. Remember, when Carter and Nate were both blind to Kelly’s true nature, Julliard was the only one who saw through her act. Without him, Sharon and I would’ve been played into the ground.”
Thomas seemed ready to reply, but Wendy’s phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the caller ID, and her expression sharpened.
“Thomas, I need to take this call. Why don’t you look around on your own? Sharon has Julliard with her for now -she doesn’t need you hovering. Don’t worry.”
With that, she hurried off.
Thomas frowned, a slight crease forming between his brows. Despite Wendy’s reassurance, unease lingered in his chest. He still couldn’t bring himself to feel at ease about Sharon.
