Yet Sharon sat there unfazed, not even bothering to help Silas up.

Scott was calmer than Silas, but as he watched Sharon’s transformation, shock filled his chest.
Was this really the same Sharon? The Sharon he knew would never have been so sharp and fearless.
Johanna glared daggers at Thomas. She couldn’t believe he was actually helping Sharon! But why? Shouldn’t he be standing by her and Jamie’s side at a time like this? 1
But Thomas stood at Sharon’s side with an air of quiet detachment, as though he hadn’t noticed Johanna’s expression at all. His posture was serene, yet his presence was dangerous; whoever dared to step too close would face his unhesitating strike.
Victoria stepped forward to help Silas to his feet.
“Silas, are you alright?”
If before, Silas had merely disdained Sharon, not caring for her existence, then now what he felt for her was nothing short of loathing.
Victoria turned her head toward Sharon, lips parting as though to speak, but in the end, she said nothing. She knew Sharon resented her. At this moment, anything she said would only pour oil on
the fire. Silence was the wiser choice. 1
Gossip was human nature, and the commotion drew more and more onlookers. Some even sent secret messages on their phones, summoning others from across the banquet. Soon, guests who had been chatting elsewhere surged toward the scene.
Richard and Rick, sensing something was amiss, hurried over as well. The moment they saw the crowd–and especially Jamie among them–their expressions stiffened. Richard’s face shifted through several shades, as if struggling to settle on one emotion.
To keep the spectacle from growing, Richard pushed his way through the onlookers and spoke firmly, “Rick, take Jamie to change his clothes. Sharon, Victoria, Scott, and Silas, come with me.‘
Upstairs, in the second–floor lounge, the atmosphere grew tense and stifling.
No one spoke first.
Victoria had already begun to sense something was wrong, yet she held her tongue.
Unable to find an opening, Richard let his gaze drift to Thomas. With Johanna escorting Jamie to change, the room held only the Kalen family—and him.
Richard smiled warmly. “You’re Thomas, aren’t you? Would you mind stepping out? We need to hold

a family meeting.”
He was, after all, a wily old fox who had held the reins of power for years–always wearing the face of a smiling tiger. No matter who stood before him, his attitude appeared genial and approachable.
But Thomas remained unmoved. “Apologies. As Sharon’s bodyguard, I must stay and protect her safety. After all…”
His eyes swept across each member of the Kalen family in turn.
“There are five of you, and only one of her. If I leave, what happens if you decide to bully her?”
Rick’s expression darkened. “What nonsense are you spouting? Why would we ever bully Sharon?”
Thomas’s voice was cool and steady. “If that’s true, then why was Sharon cast out of the family in the first place?”
Rick’s gaze shifted to Sharon, his eyes heavy as dark water.
“Sharon, must you let an outsider know our family affairs? And besides, don’t you remember why you left in the first place?”
Sharon smiled faintly.
“First of all, Thomas is my bodyguard, not an outsider. From now on, he’ll know much more than
this.
Second, I’ve explained clearly why I left. But you chose to believe Cole–an outsider–instead of me, your own blood.”
She looked Rick in the eye, her voice edged with irony. “And besides, Thomas is right. One against five? Whether in words or in fists, I could never stand a chance against you.
