Chapter 978
For a moment, Scott and Silas’s expressions turned complicated.
Even Rick hadn’t expected this outcome, but since Sharon hadn’t embarrassed the Kalen
family, it could be counted as a small victory.
Richard, however, beamed with pride, his face glowing as if nothing in the world could
compare to the honor of having Sharon as his daughter.
Sensing the time was right, Richard addressed the group clustered around her.
“My daughter is a little tired. Let her rest for now-whatever business you have can wait
until later.’
At his words, the crowd dispersed with polite smiles, no longer pressing her.
Turning to Sharon, Richard said, “Sharon, you must be exhausted. Rest for a while. When the banquet ends, I’ll personally introduce you to the company’s shareholders.”
Sharon gave a nod. “Alright.”
Once Richard had walked away, Wendy and Thomas came to her side.
Thomas handed her a glass of water.
“Your throat must be dry. Here, drink.”1
Sharon hadn’t realized how parched she was until that moment. She smiled. “Thank you.”
Wendy studied the fatigue etched between her brows and sighed.
“Banquets really take a toll. Hours just for hair and makeup, then endless small talk with people who never stop approaching you.”
Sharon sipped the water, her voice calm. “In the future, occasions like this will be routine. Fortunately, everyone only came to greet me. No one tried to make things difficult.”

Lately, she had been learning the ropes of business, but even the brightest mind couldn’t master it all in a matter of days. This remained her greatest weakness-and would continue
to be for a long time.
Wendy’s heart ached for her.
“Sharon, you haven’t eaten anything all night. You must be starving. I’ll get you
something.”
She glanced at Thomas. “Thomas, stay with Sharon. Don’t leave her side until I come back.”
“Alright,” Thomas replied.
As Wendy went to fetch food, Sharon and Thomas moved into the inner hall and sank onto a
sofa to rest.
The guests who had been seated nearby greeted her warmly, none showing the malice or
mockery she half-expected. Still, many of their gazes lingered on Thomas.
With his striking features and commanding presence, he looked every bit the scion of a
noble family. Only after asking around did people learn he was merely Sharon’s bodyguard.
A bodyguard so handsome was unusual-and the fact that Sharon kept him at her side made
their glances turn ambiguous, their thoughts laced with speculation.
Neither Sharon nor Thomas seemed to notice.
Even Richard and her three elder brothers had worn odd expressions when they first learned of him. Most people hired bodyguards of the same sex, yet Sharon had chosen a man so dangerously good-looking. It was hard not to let the imagination wander.
By the Kalen family’s old rules, this would have been unacceptable. But the Kalen brothers quickly reasoned that if Sharon poured her attention into men, she’d have less energy to wreak havoc on the company. As long as it wasn’t too outrageous, they decided to let her be.
Just then, steady footsteps sounded behind her.

Her lashes trembled violently. She turned, and her gaze collided with a face both striking and unnervingly pale.
Those shadowed, predatory eyes, paired with that cold, serpentine smile, were so achingly familiar. Like a nightmare she had spent years trying to bury.
Though her hand had long since healed, at that instant, she felt a faint phantom pain pulse through it.
Jamie’s lips curved in satisfaction as he drank in her shock. 1
