Johanna sighed. “Being the number one socialite really isn’t easy. Endless parties, endless conversations… Honestly, I’m just not cut out for this.”
Even Victoria, after mingling with so many people, showed faint signs of weariness.
“Johanna, you’ll need to adapt sooner or later. These people are connections. The more
friends you make, the more it will benefit you and Jamie.”
“I know,” Johanna murmured, “but I just can’t keep up.”
She glanced around, then asked, “Weren’t Samantha and Rachel supposed to come? I haven’t seen them in ages. What have they been busy with?”
Samantha Malcolm and Rachel Blakely were Victoria’s other two closest friends. The four of
them hadn’t been together in a long while, each buried in her own affairs.
At the mention, Victoria’s brows softened with a faint shadow of worry.
“Samantha said Lex went missing. No word at all. The Malcolm family has poured all their
efforts into searching for him. If something truly happened, the family will face upheaval. Samantha needs to prepare herself, so she won’t be free for a while.
“As for Rachel…” Her voice lowered. “Her old illness has flared up again. She’s still
recuperating. You know her health has never been strong.”
Johanna cast a cold glance toward Ginny in the distance and let out a scornful laugh.
“If Rachel weren’t sick, when would Ginny ever have had her chance to swoop in? Ginny is inferior to you in every way, yet people still dare call her your equal? If this is what passes for the standard, then the title of ‘number one socialite’ has lost all meaning.”
“It is a pity about Rachel’s health,” Victoria said quietly.
But something else came to Johanna’s mind, and her lips curved with amusement.

“Today’s banquet was supposed to be Sharon’s moment. Yet the second you walked in, every eye turned to you. Watch-she’ll probably accuse you later of stealing her spotlight.”
Victoria only shook her head. “She won’t.”
Clearly unwilling to linger on the topic of Sharon, Victoria shifted the conversation.
“By the way, where’s Jamie? Why hasn’t he come yet?”
After more than a month under the care of top medical specialists, Jamie’s injuries had finally improved, though he was still far from fully recovered. In his fight for the position of
family head, he had endured countless wounds-but none had ever left him so
incapacitated. This time, his recovery had taken longer than ever.
“He called earlier,” Johanna replied. “Something came up. He’ll be late.”
Victoria nodded. She had invited Jamie-partly for Johanna’s sake, and partly because of the
ongoing cooperation between the Kalen and Walton families. She had no reason not to.
Just as the two were talking, someone shouted, “She’s here!”
The noisy banquet hall fell into sudden silence. All eyes turned toward the woman descending slowly from the second floor.
She wore a sky-blue couture dress patterned with delicate vintage motifs, its silk hugging her slender, graceful figure. Her skin was alabaster-smooth, glowing faintly under the chandelier’s crystal light.
That silhouette alone was enough to stir wild imaginings.
Eager gazes lifted higher, hungry to see her face-and the moment they did, a collective breath caught.
Her features were chiseled to perfection. Brows arched delicately, lashes thick and feathered. Her eyes shimmered like twin pools of autumn water, luminous and fathomless.
The brilliance of the crystal light spilled over her, sculpting every flawless contour of her

Her dark hair was swept up in a loose knot, held by a single elegant emerald hairpin. A few wisps escaped, falling in soft strands against the pale column of her neck, making it seem all the more slender and swanlike.
