Chapter 973
“Our family is no small household,” Rick said coldly. “We’re hardly so destitute that we can’t even provide basic living expenses or pocket money.
“The day after she returned home, we gave her a bank card. It wasn’t an astronomical
amount, but it carried a monthly allowance of 100,000 dollars. That money was solely for
her personal use-clothes, cosmetics, jewelry, handbags, even her car and travel expenses were all covered by the family.
“If she needed a large sum beyond that allowance, all she had to do was ask. We never
restricted her finances. Even after she ran away, we didn’t freeze her card.
“And you say she fainted from exhaustion because she was working part-time jobs?”
Rick let out a sharp, derisive laugh. “A monthly allowance of 100,000 dollars is enough, even for Victoria. Do you truly believe Sharon could possibly spend it all? Tell me, was this story about her working and fainting something she told you?”
Ginny’s expression cooled at his tone. It carried the implication that Sharon had exaggerated her suffering, as though she had deliberately sought sympathy.
Her voice softened, but her words were steady. “And can you be certain that the allowance you claim to have given Sharon was ever actually spent by her?”
A faint sneer touched Rick’s eyes. “So what you want me to believe is that Sharon was so full of pride she would rather work herself to collapse than touch a single dollar from us? Are you sure that’s pride-and not stubborn self-inflicted misery?”
Ginny parted her lips, ready to argue, but in the end fell silent. She realized that no matter what she said, Rick would twist it against Sharon, always assuming the worst.
She told him Sharon had fainted from overwork; he didn’t ask after her condition, only insisted their allowance had been generous enough, accusing her of needless suffering.
Their words clashed, and nothing could bridge the distance.

She had once admired Rick-had even taken pride in the thought of marrying him. But now, standing before him, Ginny felt nothing but profound disappointment. For the first time, the idea of marrying into the Kalen family repelled her.
Rick, catching the flicker of disappointment in her eyes, frowned. He opened his mouth to speak, but she was quicker.
Her expression smoothed into composure, her tone faintly detached. “The banquet is about to begin. If you have nothing further, Rick, I’ll be going back.”
Without waiting for his reply, she turned and walked away.
When Ginny returned to the banquet hall, the crowd had swelled even more. To her surprise, not only had Xavier arrived, but so had Carter and John. Most likely, Sharon had
sent them invitations.
During her months in Amstern City, Ginny had crossed paths with Carter and Xavier a handful of times. She already knew John; back in their university days, their circle had been
on friendly terms.
At the moment, Melanie and Carol were speaking with John, though both wore faintly sour
expressions.
Ginny walked over with a smile. “What are you all discussing?”
The two women turned to her, their faces still unsettled. “Ginny, you’re finished talking?”
Glancing at their expressions, then at the buzzing conversations rippling through the banquet, Ginny immediately understood.
She offered them a reassuring look. “Don’t worry. Sharon can handle a situation like this.”
Elsewhere, Johanna accompanied Victoria as she made her rounds, her smile so stiff it

Her beauty and elegance matched Victoria’s in every measure. It was one of the reasons she
dared to call herself Victoria’s closest friend.
