Chapter 956
Johanna’s phone vibrated a moment later. Thomas had replied.
His answer was terse: [?]
Johanna quickly sent another message.
Johanna: [Thomas, my elder brother is Jamie Walton. You must have heard about the assassination
attempt at the signing event in Tesrainea a few days ago, when he was shot. Jamie just regained consciousness, and he claims you tried to kill him.]
Thomas: [You must be mistaken. How could an ordinary man like me possibly attempt to assassinate the head of the Walton family? Your brother is giving me far too much credit.]
Reading this, the corners of Johanna’s lips curved into a faint smile.
So, Thomas still didn’t know that she already knew his true identity.
This was turning into an amusing game–like playing a redemption route in a strategy sim.
And Johanna loved games like this.
Thomas wanted to assume the role of an “ordinary guy“. The kinder she was to an “ordinary guy“, the more deeply Thomas would be moved. In the end, she would make sure he could never leave her. 1
The fact that he had risen so high at such a young age proved he was every bit as capable and ruthless as her brother. Once society’s heiresses learned who Thomas really was, they would scramble to seduce him without a second thought.
The thought made her expression tighten.
If Victoria had known Thomas’s identity earlier, she never would have offered help. Johanna knew
Victoria far too well.
Countless wealthy heirs pursued Victoria, but not every suitor was even qualified to be her friend.
To catch Victoria’s eye, status and family background always came first.
Second was appearance: young, handsome, and unmarried–Victoria’s ideal.
After all, no woman wanted to be courted by a lecherous man old enough to be her father.
The Kalen family stood at the peak of high society; Victoria’s choices among promising young men were endless. She herself was so outstanding that few dared harbor thoughts of her if they weren’t qualified. And even if some old fool tried, her three protective older brothers would drive him off.
Thomas, however, matched every one of Victoria’s requirements.

A sliver of unease tugged at Johanna–what if Victoria tried to take him away? Against her, Johanna would stand no chance.
She was just about to reply when another message from Thomas appeared.
Thomas: [Besides, you’re the one I’ve been searching for. How could I possibly harm your brother? But if you suspect me, then let’s not contact each other for now. Once my name is cleared, we can speak again.]
Her lips were still curved sweetly at the first half, but by the second, her smile vanished. Panic shot through her, and she hurried to type a reply.
Before she could do so, a knock sounded at the door.
Victoria walked in.
“Johanna, how’s Jamie? Has he woken up yet?”
Johanna looked up instinctively, her face stricken with confusion.
Victoria’s eyes narrowed. “What’s wrong? Is his condition that bad?”
Johanna’s lips moved, stumbling over her words. “It’s not Jamie… It’s Thomas. Um, no. Actually, it is Jamie.”
Seeing her in such disarray, Victoria quickly soothed her.
“Johanna, calm down. Tell me slowly. I’ll help you think of a solution.”
With Victoria’s steady reassurance, Johanna gradually regained control of herself. She recounted everything from the beginning.
Victoria didn’t immediately dismiss her story. Instead, she fell into deep thought.
Johanna’s heart sank at the sight.
“Victoria, don’t tell me… you also believe Thomas was behind it?”
Victoria finally asked, “Johanna, did Jamie describe how Thomas supposedly tried to kill him?”
