Chapter 920
A faintly mocking smile lingered at the corner of Jamie’s lips.
“Though this violin is nothing more than a relic, its former owner indirectly caused Victoria to lose her mother. Destroying it will at least bring her mother’s soul some peace.”
Jamie, trained and powerful, struck with astonishing force.
Sharon could only watch as the instrument splintered piece by piece before her very eyes.
“Let me go! Let me go!” she cried, straining desperately to rush forward, but the bodyguards pinned her down. with merciless strength.
Shaluna shattered into two jagged halves. Fragments of wood scattered across the floor like broken memories.
Hatred flickered in Sharon’s eyes as she glared at Jamie.
But he had long grown accustomed to such looks. They meant nothing to him. Instead, his smile only widened— bright, almost childlike, as if he had finally found a toy he adored. 1
“I had a gun to your head, and you didn’t flinch like this. And now? All this grief for a violin? Don’t tell me it’s worth more than your life?”
Moisture glazed Sharon’s eyes, a shimmering heat threatening to spill. But she forced herself to hold back. Tears were useless–nothing more than a weakling’s weapon. She clenched her jaw in silence.
Jamie studied her, amused. “I thought you were tougher than this. But look at you–without a man to defend you, you’re nothing.”
Sharon lifted her head and met his gaze. “You say I rely on men. But what about you? Don’t you lean on your family’s power? If you’re not standing on your own either, what makes you any better than me?”
Jamie crouched down, patting her head as one might a stray dog.
“You know… you almost make sense. Unfortunately for you, my backers are stronger than yours. Which means you’ll always be beneath my heel.
“Oh, I nearly forgot to tell you–I love watching you like this. In pain, helpless, yet unable to do a thing.”
Sharon’s eyes reddened as she stared at the ruined violin on the floor. It felt as though blood dripped from her gaze itself. She forced out her words through clenched teeth.
“So all this… just because you think I tarnished Victoria’s reputation? Did it ever occur to you that maybe I wasn’t the one who did it?”
Jamie’s expression remained indifferent.
“That doesn’t matter. Consider it eliminating a potential threat to Victoria. Besides—” He paused, then smiled at her with deceptive warmth. “I’ve never liked the sight of you anyway.”
Åfter all, if Johanna and Victoria both despised Sharon, why should he see her any differently?
Sharon’s eyes wavered like a candle flame in the wind–flickering, fragile, yet burning on. A chill premonition swept over her. She would not walk away from today unscathed.
Marcentine, the Kalen Estate.
Because she had shielded Johanna from sulfuric acid, Victoria now bore an ugly scar across her arm.
Jamie had immediately flown in the best medical team for her surgery. The operation went smoothly, and since Victoria disliked hospitals, she returned home quickly to recuperate.
While Jamie was away handling urgent business, Johanna remained by Victoria’s side, personally caring for her. After settling her back into her room, Johanna’s eyes landed on a painting displayed prominently in the center of the chamber. Her expression shifted, a flicker of something unreadable flashing through her gaze.
“Jamie parted with this painting for you?”
Victoria glanced at her. “Does Jamie really like it that much?”
Johanna chuckled. “Of course.”
Victoria, too, admired MK’s style. “Jamie said he collected many of MK’s works. Does he really like that artist so much?”
Johanna’s smile turned faint. “Back then, when we weren’t nearly as wealthy, there were only a handful of artists Jamie admired whose work he could even afford to buy.”
