Chapter 1156 

Sharon turned her head and froze. 

A brightly colored snake was slithering toward her through the wet grass, Its scales glinting under the faint moonlight. It was as thick as her forearm, its body rippling in smooth, fluid motion while a red tongue flickered 

in and out of its mouth. 

She didn’t know what species it was, but the vivid, almost dazzling pattern across its body screamed venomous. 

A shiver ran down her spine. Truth be told, snakes were the one thing she feared most. And of course, in a mountain forest like this, they were everywhere. 

The serpent had noticed her too. It coiled tightly, its upper body rising, head poised to strike. 

Sharon gripped the knife in her hand–a compact, razor–sharp blade Thomas had given her. It was lightweight and easy to conceal, perfect for self–defense. 

Her breathing slowed. Muscles tensed. Eyes locked on the snake. 

It slithered a little closer, closing the distance until it could easily strike. 

Sharon didn’t wait. With a sudden, decisive motion, she swung the knife. 

The blade sliced cleanly through the air–then through flesh. 

The snake’s head flew aside, its body collapsing with a dull thud. 

A sharp, metallic scent filled the air. Blood. 

Sharon’s stomach churned; she gagged, nearly vomiting. 

The stench was overwhelming. 

Before she could recover, a faint sound broke through the night–a rustle, steady and deliberate. 

Her heart leapt. Instinctively, she raised her head, alert once more. 

Out of the darkness, a tall, commanding figure emerged–his features sharp, his stride calm and steady. 

“Thomas…” Sharon’s voice trembled, relief flooding her chest. The tension in her limbs melted all at once, leaving her weak. “How did you find me?” 

Thomas’s gaze swept over her pale face. “The rain left traces on the path. I followed them here.” 

Sharon’s expression tightened. “Traces? You mean… footprints?” 

If he could track her, so could the assassins. 

Thomas shook his head. “No. Marks, not prints. The ground here is covered in layers of leaves–no clear footprints. I covered the traces I found along the way. They won’t find us.” 

Only then did Sharon exhale a shaky breath of relief.

She gave him a look of half awe, half disbelief. “You can track traces that subtle?” 

He replied in that same understated tone, “I know a little.” 

A little. Always a little. 

She was about to tease him when her expression suddenly shifted. 

A strange tingling crawled up her leg–sharp, burning, and numb all at once. 

Sharon’s head snapped down. 

A thin, red snake, no thicker than her thumb, was colled tightly around her calf. 

Thomas saw it too, and his face hardened in an instant.

He moved like lightning–snatching the snake just above its seven–Inch point and lifting it off her leg. His fingers tightened, and with a single, precise twist, he snapped its spine. 

The snake went limp. 

He tossed it aside and immediately crouched, inspecting her wound. 

Sharon’s pant leg was torn, two neat punctures marring the skin beneath. 

Thomas rolled the fabric up–and his pupils contracted sharply. 

In just seconds, the area around the bite had already turned black. 

The poison was spreading fast. 

Sharon’s vision blurred; her ears rang with a high, dull hum. 

They hadn’t come here prepared. No medical supplies. No antivenom. No quick way down the mountain. 

A terrifying thought crept into her mind, “I might die here.” 

Her gaze fell on the darkening wound, the venom already climbing up her leg. Her fingers clenched around the handle of her knife. 

If she cut away the flesh where the snake had bitten her… maybe she could stop the poison from spreading.
