Sharon gripped her gun tightly, her expression taut with nerves. She found an opening, steadied her aim, and pulled the trigger. 

Bang! 

The bullet struck a man’s leg. 

All those hours she’d spent at the shooting range hadn’t been in vain–she’d never expected the day would come when she’d have to use what she learned for real. 

But this wasn’t practice. This was life and death. Her hands trembled despite her efforts to stay calm, and her aim wavered a little. Fortunately, it wasn’t off enough to hit Thomas by mistake, 

Unlike him, Sharon couldn’t bring herself to shoot with such icy precision–to end a life with a single, decisive bullet to the head. 

After several shots, her position was exposed. The assassins turned toward her, and she froze. She quickly stowed the gun and ducked back into hiding. 

When the killers shifted their focus to Sharon, Thomas’s gaze went cold. 

Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger. 

Bullets flew from the silenced gun in his hand. The assassins who had started after Sharon dropped one by one, bodies hitting the ground without a sound. Every shot Thomas fired was clean, efficient, and deadly accurate. 

Meanwhile, Sharon ran for her life, darting deeper into the forest. She could hear gunfire echoing behind her and the sound of footsteps closing in. 

They were chasing her. 

Fear surged through her veins. She didn’t dare stop, didn’t dare look back. Branches whipped against her face, and sharp thorns tore into her arms and calves, leaving fiery lines of pain. 

She didn’t know how long she’d been running before the forest finally fell silent. 

No more footsteps. No more gunfire. 

Panting, she collapsed against a thick patch of bushes, gasping for air. Her heart pounded violently, like a drum in her chest. 

For the moment, she was safe. 

She reached for her phone to call for help–only to find it missing. A frantic search through her pockets and jacket confirmed it: it was gone. She must have lost it while fleeing. 

Around her, the forest was pitch–black, the only light coming from the faint silver glow of the moon filtering through the leaves. In her panic, she hadn’t paid attention to where she was running; now she had no idea which direction she’d come from.

Suddenly, lightning split the sky, and a low rumble of thunder rolled across the mountains. 

Raindrops splattered against her face. Sharon lifted her head, staring up into the pitch–dark sky. 

The mountain path had already been treacherous–now, with the rain coming down, one wrong step could send her plunging to her death. 

The rain intensified quickly, soaking her through in seconds. The chill of the mountain night cut straight through her wet clothes, biting into her skin. 

There was nowhere to take shelter. Reluctantly, Sharon forced herself to keep moving, hoping to find a place- any place to get out of the rain. 

But the muddy path grew even more slippery underfoot. She slowed her pace and failed to notice the jagged stone beneath her shoe. 

She stumbled and fell hard, her arm scraping across a sharp rock. A long gash tore open along her forearm. 

Even with her pain tolerance, she couldn’t suppress a sharp hiss through her teeth. 

This forest was vast–dense and endless. Even if Thomas came looking for her, it would take him a long time to find her. 

Sharon pressed herself beneath a tall tree, its thick canopy shielding her from the worst of the downpour. She knew it was dangerous to stand under trees during a thunderstorm, but here, surrounded by towering trunks and with no open space in sight, she had no other choice. 1 

She might as well take her chances. 

After what felt like an eternity, the rain began to lighten, tapering off to a faint drizzle. 

Sharon was just considering finding a safer spot to rest for the night–maybe wait until daylight to figure out how to get out of this place–when a sharp, unmistakable sound sliced through the silence.
