“Someone who treats a con artist like a treasure–now that’s a first,” Silas sneered. “Sharon, when you end up penniless, don’t say I didn’t warn you!” 

Sharon frowned. 

She, too, had her doubts about Doug’s offer, but accusing someone of being a fraud to their face without proof was far too rude. 

She quickly apologized, turning to Doug. “Mr. Newman, please don’t mind him. My brother’s not in the best state of mind.” 

Silas’s face darkened at once. 

“Sharon, what the hell did you just say? With that kind of attitude–no respect for your elders–who besides a scammer would invest in you? Hah! You can’t even manage people properly, and you think you can manage a business?” 

Sharon’s expression grew colder, her patience thinning. 

“Silas, if you’re so certain he’s a fraud, do you have proof? If you do, show it to everyone right now. Otherwise, what you’re doing is slander–plain and simple. Before accusing others of being incapable, maybe fix your own head first.” 

Her words struck Silas speechless. 

Doug gave him a look–an odd, assessing glance, as if he were watching a lunatic who’d escaped from an asylum. 

Without lingering, Doug said calmly, “Miss McKinzie, I’ll take my leave now.” 

Sharon offered a polite farewell before turning away. 

Once Doug had gone, she didn’t spare Silas another glance and started back toward the building. 

But Silas stepped in front of her, blocking her path. 

“Sharon, stop right there!” 

Her face remained impassive. “Move.” 

Silas let out a sharp, derisive laugh. 

“Still pretending when you’re already at the end of your rope? You shouldn’t take on what you can’t handle. Boasting big when things are easy–but when the time comes, you’ll still end up begging for help. You had the audacity to claim you’d acquire twenty percent of the Silverstone Group’s shares. The Silverstones may not compare to our family, but they’re no small player in Marcentine. 2 

“To buy that much stock, you’d need over thirty billion. Thirty billion, Sharon! Do you think you can come up with that in three days? Aside from the top few families, no one could produce that kind of money on such short notice.” 

He paused, tilting his chin upward, pride gleaming in his eyes. “Even if you gathered every one of your suitors, they couldn’t raise that much in one go.” 

Businessmen thrived on leverage–using minimal capital to maximize profit. 

As long as there was cash flow, they’d reinvest after setting aside only what was necessary to keep the cycle going. That was how they achieved the fastest rate of growth. 

The Kalen Group’s financial reports might show immense liquidity, but that was only because they’d just received payment from a recent collaboration. They were still consolidating funds and hadn’t yet launched their next project. Otherwise, even the Kalen family wouldn’t be able to free up that much capital overnight.
